It is home to the legendary "corkscrew" turn, a steep left turn into an immediate right turn while descending a hill. Other course highlights include the Rahal Straight and the Andretti Hairpin. The track was first built in 1957 and has hosted many iconic series and races, and some amazing highlights, over the years. Laguna Seca hosted A1GP's only visit to the United States in 2006. The track was reconfigured with three additional turns in 1988 to host MotoGP races. In the late 1980s the track was considered as a replacement for the Detroit street course to host the United States Grand Prix but Formula 1 ultimately deemed the track "too remote" and went with a street course in Phoenix instead, a disastrous decision that killed off the US Grand Prix for almost a decade within three years of the move. The track is the traditional home of the Monterey Motorsports Reunion vintage races. 2. DH101 posted: 11.03.2015 - 7:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) By far my favorite american circuit. 3. I'd like to see that increase. 6. bduddy posted: 12.23.2017 - 8:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The noise restrictions and such are a huge issue. A lot of the neighbors (rich, influential neighbors) do not like racing at all, and scheduling a national event would test that. Mazda sponsorship is ending in 2018: http://www.motortrend.com/news/mazda-ends-naming-rights-deal-laguna-seca/ Hopefully they don't ruin the name like "Sonoma" did... 7. The Google car was sent around the track in 2009 to take pictures of the course during an ALMS race weekend. In a fun bit of cross promotion the ALMS had some of its race cars sandwich the Google car during its lap so looking in front of you on the track will always mean you see the #3 Corvette Racing C6.R, the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 RSR, and the #8 B-K Motorsports Lola B08/86 Mazda while looking behind you will reveal the the #2 Audi R10 TDI and the #9 Patron Highcroft Racing Acura ARX-01b. 8. Racing scenes for the infamous 1983 commercial for the video "Pole Position" were shot here at Laguna Seca. "It'll bust your crank and leave skid marks on your soul." 9. Despite that the track racing scenes early in the movie were filmed here at Laguna Seca, just as some scenes for the original "The Love Bug" movie were eight years earlier. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
