Gastonia Fairgrounds. 1/3 Mile Dirt oval. Closed during 1980â??s. Held
one race in 1958.

I've had a really hard time finding this one. Usually the fairgrounds
are easy to find because they're still around, but these don't seem to
be. On teh 1969 historic aerials view I found what kind of looks like a
semi-abandoned track just east of the intersection of what is now
Jenkins Road and Shady Nook Circle, but I'm not convinced that's it. If
anyone from this area knows more, that would be awesome.

There's now a private Christian school on the old fairgrounds site.
There's an aerial photo on the web showing the fairgrounds & the track
in the upper left corner. I was born 3 years after that lone NASCAR race
in my hometown, & never even saw any of the weekly races that were ran
there in the 60s, before the track closed for weekly racing. During the
county fair however, there was always a demolition derby & the Jack
Kochman Hell Drivers thrill show every year.

With Robinwood Speedway on Robinwood Rd operating into the mid 60s &
Carolina Speedway operating from the mid 60s on, (& still going strong
in fact), both in the Gastonia area, the fairgrounds track had a hard
time attracting drivers & spectators the sporadic times it was operational.

Found it, thanks. Gaston Christian School is located on the former track
footprint.

Track still looks active in a 1969 aerial view and the faded outline of
the track was still visible in aerial views as late as 1998. Looks like
the whole site had been abandoned for a long time before the school was
built there.
