McCormick had been the home to the Asheville Tourists Baseball team and saw such greats as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Willie Stargell and a batboy named Cal Ripken. For three years in the 1950s, baseball abandoned McCormick Field. A quarter-mile race track was constructed around the baseball diamond and racing ensued. The NASCAR Grand National Division made one visit to McCormick Field in July 1958. Jim Paschal, driving Julian Pettyâ??s No. 49 Chevrolet won the 150-lap event on the quarter-mile asphalt track. The location still remains to host home games for the Asheville Tourists. 2. Built around the tight confines of a baseball field, drivers had to pay particularly close attention. Lee Petty was running near the front during a heat race at the track when a bump from Cotton Owens sent him into the first-base dugout. The team repaired Petty's car in time for the main event and he finished one lap down in fourth place. Jim Paschal won driving a car owned by Julien Petty, Lee's brother. 3.
