I hope to see a race in person here one day. 2. Butch Stewart posted: 02.26.2010 - 4:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I been to 6 races here and they are the best! It hosts the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series. "America's Premier Short Track" also was formerly host to the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series. The United States Auto Club Silver Crown and National Sprint Car Series ran as support races to the IndyCar Series until 2009, though neither USAC Series has announced if they will return for 2010 after the departure of the IndyCar Seies. Richmond International Raceway is one of a few race tracks to host all of its events under the lights. The track sold out 33 Consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. The sellout streak ended in September 2008 partially due to the economic downturn, though the major factor in ticket sales was the Impact of Tropical Storm Hannah. Richmond has hosted the final "regular-season" race, leading up to the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, each year since the Chase concept was introduced in 2004. 5. Light were added for fall 1991 and has been used ever since. Richmond Petty won the most races here with 13. 6. Anonymous posted: 07.27.2011 - 3:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) i think this track could actually benifit from racing in the daytime, 6 of the last 7 races here, have been absolutely dominated and/or won by Kyle Busch or Denny Hamlin, and the races haven't been as exciting, at least from a tv standpoint. The track at night is just too much of a JGR playground for me to really enjoy because of toyota and crybaby drivers. Last 7 Richmond Races: May 2008: Run at night, Denny Hamlin leads 381 of first 382 laps, flat tire takes him out, only 4 lead changes, Clint Bowyer wins. Sept 2008: Run on sunday because of rain, no driver leads more the 104 of 400 laps, no clear favourite, 22 lead changes, Jimmie Johnson wins. May 2009: Run at night, Busch and Hamlin combine to lead over half of race, 21 lead changes, Kyle Busch wins. Sept 2009: Run at night, Denny Hamlin leads 299 laps, only 4 drivers led a lap, only 2 led more then 5 laps, Hamlin & Busch finish in top 5, 12 lead changes, Denny Hamlin wins. May 2010: Run at night, KB leads over half the race, general lack of excitement, 12 lead changes, Kyle Busch wins. Sept 2010: Run at night, Denny leads 251 laps, Hamlin, Busch, Logano, finish 1st, 2nd, & 4th, only 14 lead changes, 346 laps led across Hamlin & Edwards, Denny Hamlin wins. Apr 2011: Run at night, Kyle leads 235 laps, Denny leads 38, logano gets wrecked, still finishes 11th, only gordon could keep up with JGR duo, only 14 lead changes, Busch wins, Hamlin 2nd. Despite how cool night racing is, I think Richmond could be better in the day, and with a softer tire, I'm also tired of the JGR dominence, I would like to have a race at richmond where I cant pick the winner out of a single organization. 8. My recollection is that they kept the start/finish line in the same place that it was originally, as they kept some of the original grandstands, buildings, and towers in place despite the expansion, at least at first. I'm looking at an old Terraserver aerial photo as I'm typing this and the grandstands back in 1994 look like a mishmash of sizes, as opposed to more uniform appearance seen in the present day aerial photo. And when you look at it on an aerial photo, it's only about 75 yards or so off of the center of the D. It sure seems farther off than that when you're seeing it from the perspective of the grandstands or TV cameras. 9. You can really arc the car when driving into turn one but turn three is very tight. Pit road entry is exceptionally easy at this track, as the apron and the track do not have a wide variation in banking. 10. Basically, the racing is better. Also, too many night races on the schedule tend to dilute the novelty of the event. It used to be that when a night race was upcoming, everyone got excited because it was unique (such as the Bristol night race). IMO, I think the only night races should be the Coca-Cola 600 (day to night), the "Firecracker" 400 at Daytona, the Bristol night race, and one of the two Richmond races. Also, the Bud Shootout and the All-Star exhibition events. 23. Anthony posted: 08.29.2016 - 9:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Night racing isn't that great, the cars have too much grip 24. The spring race was known as the Pontiac Excitement 400 from 1988 until Pontiac left the sport in 2003, and Chevy sponsored one or both races during the first decade of the 2000s. Now, Toyota has reached nearly a decade of sponsoring the spring Richmond race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
