Southside Speedway (affectionately dubbed "The Toughest Short Track in
the South") is a short track used for stock car auto racing located just
South of Richmond, Virginia in Chesterfield County. It is a .333[1] mile
asphalt oval owned and operated by Sue Clements and Patsy Stargardt. The
2009 track champions were Chris Dodson (Late Model Sportsman), Billy
Morris (Modifieds), Tommy Tatum (Grand Stock), Mike Chapman (U-Car)
James Loving (Street Stock) and Stanley Holmes (Champ Kart).
Southside Speedway, which used to be known as Royall Speedway in the
early 50's, first opened on April 15, 1959 with Modifieds as the feature
division. For a few years, it was used as a part of NASCAR's early
circuit. The first NASCAR race on Southside speedway happened on August
18, 1961. At that time, the track was a 1/4 mile dirt oval.

The track also plays host annually to the Denny Hamlin Foundation Short
Track Showdown 250, which is a 250 lap Late Model race on the Thursday
before the spring Sprint Cup race

Southside Speedway is located south of Richmond, VA in Midlothian, VA.
Also, beginning in 2011 Southside will once again be a NASCAR sanctioned
track in the Whelen All American Series. It had operated without any
kind of sanctioning since it had dropped the NASCAR sanction after their
2002 season.

This track could be listed as "Southside" instead of "Richmond" on the
results pages to prevent confusion between Richmond Raceway.

Southside didn't see any racing at all this year due to the pandemic.
Today it was announced that the track will not be reopening.

Announced today that the track will close after over 60 years of
operation, yet another victim of COVID19.

To be honest, if Denny Hamlin doesn't at least try to buy his home
track, I'd be surprised...
