RaceFanX posted: 06.06.2015 - 11:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Nicknamed "VIR," this track was built in 1957 and has been one of America's best road courses in the years since. For decades a signature feature of this track was the "Oak Tree" turn where a 200-year old giant oak stood alongside the track. It collapsed in July 2013. A relative tree grown from one of the famed oaks' acorns was planted at the track near the site of the old tree, but outside the track, the following year. This track was the site of the first-ever IMSA GT race in 1971. Scenes for a "Series 16" episode of the British car program "Top Gear" were filmed here. The episode featured the show's hosts visiting the course to race their European supercars against each other as part of an American road trip. In addition to the track the episode also showed off VIR's accompanying resort facilities. 2.
