It's now an industrial park though they still use the long runways to land big planes. I would say this was a temporary track located out there somewhere but I will ask some of our local seniors if they know anything. 4. Take a look at Google maps - street level of that area. 5. I looked at all of Vocational Dr on Street View and saw nothing except some red clay that is possibly related to a racetrack. What exactly is it we should take a look at? Exactly WHERE on Vocational Dr? 6. Aldo posted: 01.14.2019 - 6:53 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) A couple of years ago I fund the exact place of this track. After trying Google Earth and historicaerials.com, I tried a federal map site which bring me a post WWII aerial shot of that area. The track was just south of 1507 Antioch Church Road at the entrance of Sunland Distribution Inc. http://racersreunion.com/community/forum/new_posts/37804/aug-25th-1951-the-forgotten-race-at-air-base-speedway-greenville-sc 7. With, grandstands, lights, and little dust, this track sounded good, but had no bathrooms, little parking, and was on an Air Force Base. It just makes you wonder, how many other tracks like this, were lost to time 9. Gman2007 posted: 09.02.2019 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Did you get this from a YouTube vid? 10. JollyMeanGiant posted: 09.02.2019 - 10:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This track was actually dirt, not paved. It was apparently treated with calcium to keep the dust levels at a minimum. Here is a photo somebody managed to dig up of the track taken in 1951 from a press advertisement in the local newspaper back then after seeing S1apSh0es: https://i.imgur.com/eJPruqS.jpg Air Base Speedway apparently did not last long, it opened in 1950 but was abandoned by at least 1964. 11. hwf0712 posted: 09.03.2019 - 7:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It didn't open in 1950, in fact 1946/7. And it most likely died in lat 1951 when the promoter was charged for trying to sell it with liens on it, when he said there were none. (I have newspaper clippings to back all my things up) 12. The track also hosted motorcycle races 13. Noah posted: 09.04.2019 - 9:14 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) After some more searching, the speedway held its inaugural race weekend July 4th and July 5th,1949 with 2 days of motorcycle races, under the name as "Textile Speedway" The track was built by Charlie Hicks, who,at the time, owned a motorcycle dealership. Around September of 1949,the track began being chemically treated in order to have less dust, and also the turns of the track were banked "up to 10 feet high" The first stock car races on the track happened in November of 1949. 14. P.S. Air Base speedway was its own entity, not a temporary track on Donaldson Air Base. 15. Shame that not much is known about why this track collapsed 18. Noah posted: 09.21.2020 - 8:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There is a small clip of video of a race at what I believe to be Air Base Speedway in this Tim Flock NASCAR documentary The wall surrounding the turn and light poles in the infield look extremely similar https://youtu.be/EBSKcg1zqEU?t=203 Starts at 3:23 21. DI9_ForLife posted: 09.21.2020 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20, it's quite possible. The geography of the track looks very similar as I saw light poles in the infield around the soil, which matches the soil used at Air Base. Like you said the walls look similar so you may be right. Great discovery, this may be the only footage of a race at Air Base out there. 22.
