None of the active drivers that are in the Sprint Cup Series today have ever raced at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway and neither have some of the legends like Darrell Waltrip and Kyle Petty. From 1951 to 1969, the race course offered some wins from drivers like Richard Petty, Bob Flock, Fonty Flock, Lee Petty, and a win by Fireball Roberts. As a dirt oval track, the speedway helped served its purposed during the dirt-dominated formative years of what is now called the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Other NASCAR legends like Banjo Matthews, Ralph Earnhardt, Junior Johnson, and Cotton Owens had made notable appearances here. An anti-noise ordinance was used to shut down the track after years of racing; this fight was staged as early as the 1970 racing season when a group of citizens petitioned their city council to shut down the track. Originally, the objectors were hotel operators by 75% of the Asheville Citizen newspaper wanted that track to be closed in a poll done in the summer of 1987. The property is now occupied by North Buncombe High School. 2. There were stands on both the back adn front.Track is oriented 10-4. You can still see the NW two turns. The SW straight went through the infield of the ballfields and the bottom turns were pretty much between the baseball field adn the football practice field. Other straight was about behind the football stands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
