NASCAR fans voiced support for years to having a road course race in the "Chase" and this event will fulfill that. While many NASCAR tracks have roval layouts, most famously Daytona and Indianapolis which are used for several major races, this will be the first one to host national-level NASCAR races on one its roval tracks. The NASCAR K&N West series previously ran roval races at Fontana before this. The other NASCAR ovals with infield road courses include Atlanta, Las Vegas, Fontana, Texas, Kansas, New Hampshire (where a large chunk of the road course is outfield section), Pocono, and Homestead. Phoenix and Talladega previously had infield road course and Pocono even had an infield short track but all were demolished or repurposed. Michigan International Speedway has an infield road course that was previously used for racing and remains in existence but its main purpose now is vehicle testing and training by the Michigan State Police. 4. Most notably the track was used to host IMSA races during that series' heyday with races in 1971, 1974, and from 1982 to 1986. The American Le Mans Series ran one race here in 2000 while Can-Am raced here in 1978 and 1979. The popular SCCA Trans-Am series also raced here in 1981 and again after a long absence in 2000. SCCA Formula Super Vee also held a race on the infield course in 1980. The SCCA-run Pirelli World Challenge raced here in 2007 but on a modified layout that mostly ran the oval with addition of the frontstretch chicane at the entrance to the traditional course. 5. That part of the course still remains and is used as access roads for parking and camping. 6. RacingFan_78 posted: 06.11.2018 - 7:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Roval looks OK 7. I've never understood that either, because Indianapolis' oval and road course venue are counted as two different tracks as well. 12. It could be that this race will be ran only once because of possible issues and attrition. Anyway looking forward to it! Hopefully not yet another race which NASCAR will screw up with their officiating. 13. Whoops!) #7/#11 - The only reason it's being considered a different track on RR is to be consistent with NASCAR's record keeping regarding the matter, as they've already stated they'll be considering it a separate track for historical purposes. 15. Sector posted: 07.17.2018 - 5:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #14 - That's how it should be. Glad they decided to do that. Someone once mentioned it'll be a 130 lap race. Is that still correct? 16. Seibaru posted: 07.17.2018 - 5:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race will apparently be 109 laps. Stages are 25-25-59. 17. You'd think it would be longer but...guess not. 19. I think that Jim France is interim ceo, he is going to try to do as much as he can if he can add more road courses or unique tracks to the sport(if Brain dead France doesn't return). 20. German500 posted: 09.27.2018 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @ 19 I hope they replace some oval races with rovals, if the track has two dates per year. So Texas, Kansas and Daytona can also be candidates for future roval races. In addition, I would like to see Road America get a cup race. Eventually in exchange for the second Michigan race. 22. George Costanza posted: 09.27.2018 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @ 21 While the roval idea is very unique for racing, I don't think they'll do it for more than twice a season, but it will all depend on how this weekend's race plays out. With that said, I'm definitely all for new tracks on the schedule. If it were up to me, each track will only receive one date, aside from plate tracks and short tracks, and have smaller tracks in the area of the track with a lost date, e.i. Gateway and Eldora. 23. Sector posted: 02.06.2019 - 8:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looks like as far as Road Course statistics are concern, this isn't counted as a Road Course? I was looking at the Road Course stats and it isn't updated. I'm okay with that since this is technically "not a road course" circuit as oppose to Sonoma and the Glen, but interesting to think about. 26. Bayne&BowmanFan posted: 06.25.2019 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The backstretch chicane was altered for 2019, moving the inside wall of the racetrack further into the infield, creating a sharper entry turn into the chicane. Looks like it'll create some passing as drivers have to brake to make the first corner, which appears to be about 75 degrees. 27. Corey posted: 09.04.2019 - 8:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To further comment on the new chicane, it will now be about 54 feet at its widest point vs the 32 last year. Matt DiBenedetto took a pace car and nearly blew the chicane driving that. He mentioned that the speeds will be about 30 mph slower, so we might see the chicane as another passing opportunity. 28. Based on some of the cryptic answers provided, Moody raised the prospect that this may be the site of a IndyCar/NASCAR doubleheader. 29. RaceFanX posted: 09.29.2019 - 8:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) During the NASCAR races here the first turn out of the trioval into the infield has quickly picked up the nickname the "Heartburn Turn." While some of this is a joke about Tums antacids have placed ads there during the races some of it is also a reference to just how much chaos that turn has caused of late. 30. Sector posted: 10.10.2020 - 9:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The NASCAR races in 2020 has had an insane amount of rain. The Xfinity series was so chaotic throughout the field because of wet conditions that the racing was intense. Rain is forecast at 90% on Sunday, Cup will most likely have to deal with wet conditions as well. It will be a historic weekend for NASCAR to actually race with rain tires for the first time in history (Well, first time in Cup; Xfinity did it once before at Montreal in 2008). 31. possum posted: 10.10.2020 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @30 - Xfinity has raced in the rain several times. I think Mid-Ohio in 2016 was the most recent. 32. MSportRev posted: 10.10.2020 - 10:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @31, Road America earlier this year and Watkins Glen in 2018. 33.
