The Daytona Beach Road Course held the first race sanctioned by NASCAR in 1948. The track was a few miles east of the proposed NASCAR Hall of Fame site. Charlotte Speedway was a three-quarter mile long dirt track. The first event in 1949 was a 150-mile (240Â km) race. Other events were 100, 113, or 150Â miles (240Â km) long. Closed October 17, 1956. 2. craig posted: 03.30.2010 - 1:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Does anyone know the exact address of this track? 3. In the direction of the airport--but definitely not on the airport property. 6. There's a historic marker that remember the first Strictly Stock (now Sprint Cup) race on Little Rock Road. On the site of the old track there's a hotel called Courtyard Marriott and a private truck parking slot. 7. tony lockhart posted: 05.10.2016 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Charlotte Speedway Old track used be old Metrolina Speedway check this google maps.. Could the All-Star race possibly be on the road course in the future? Track is between 3.2 and 3.4 depending on which option they take. The course cuts into the pits some, because of that, it would have to be the All-Star and not the Fall race. 9. Each segment except the final segment drivers will have to complete one lap of the road course before the end of each segment. That would definitely add some excitement to the All-Star race my only fear is I don't necessarily know if it would be safe. 10. Harvey Charles & Pat Charles were builders and managers of the track, which opened July 11, 1948. They leased the property from Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Allison of Charlotte. 12. My parents rented a garage apartment from the Allisons until I reached six years old & my earliest memories are are from that home. The apartment was dangerously close to the wooden fence surrounding the track - probably 50-60 feet in distance. Mr. Allison would occasionally carry me over to the track. And I recall his walking around the infield while holding me & 'showing me off' to some of the drivers, two of whom I remember were Curtis Turner & Buck Baker. There were certainly others, but those two were easily remembered because of their eventual NASCAR fame. Some of the area where the track was located eventually became the location of an RV dealership operated by Mr. Allison's youngest son. I have not lived in Charlotte for a number of years, but when visiting always take time to drive down that stretch of Little Rock Road. 13. Honestly it looks like you can still see some of the outline of the track on Google earth. I would have to walk the ground (which I intend to do) and see if there is anything at all left. 14. I compared the 1949 to the 1948 topo maps. You can see a distinct difference in buildings on the two maps. the '49 map has new buildings that look eerily like grandstands. I know this map stuff, I taught it to ROTC cadets in college. Plus..it matches up perfectly with the NC Roadside Historical Marker...about 200 yards west of where Little Rock Rd crosses I85. The land is still wooded so I am gonna get me some history even if it is a dirtclod. Case closed. Now I can move on to tracking down other lost tracks. 15. thog posted: 07.07.2020 - 3:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) This track could be listed as "Charlotte I-85" instead of "Charlotte" on the results pages to prevent confusion between Southern States Fairgrounds and Charlotte Motor Speedway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
