The park consists of two tracks: a 1/2 mile tri-oval and a 1/4 mile oval. The tri-oval seats 8,500 fans with room for 28 RVs, while the 1/4 mile track seats 2,050. Additionally, the track has several air conditioned suites located behind the main grandstand. Concord is home to several racing series, including the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and the USARacing Series. The track is active as a site for the filming of several television commercials, television shows, and music videos. Track closed in 1978 but reopened a year later. NASCAR raced on the .5 mile dirt oval in 1956-59 and 62?/64?. 2. us 4 u posted: 11.08.2010 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) Thanks for the info dude. Is this New Hampshire speedway? 3. reggiel posted: 06.05.2012 - 5:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sorry, but this track was the old Concord dirt track that was at another location other than today's track. I attended on several occasions when dirt track great like Ralph Earnhardt, Stick Elliott, Chuck Piazza, Don Bumgardner and others raced every Saturday night. Lots of fun and great racing! 4. One held Grand National races from 1956 to 1959, and the other one in 1962 and 1964. 5. Phil H posted: 12.18.2013 - 1:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) yeah, the races listed on the site (Cup Series;Convertibles) are not from this track at all. the 1/2 mile facility is now shut-down as of 2013. this track ran quite a few Hooters Pro Cup, it was a true oval 3/8 for awhile, then was reconfigured to 1/2 mile with a dogleg on the backstretch. Never did well after that. Hope it can revive itself someday. 6. Aldo posted: 07.17.2015 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) So the 1/4 mile track held NASCAR GN races from 1956 to 1959. Where 1962 and 1964 races were held? 7. Alex posted: 07.17.2015 - 11:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Concord Speedway that exists today is a different track from the one that exists today. The current one is on US Highway 601 in the SE part of Concord. The Concord Speedway that the NASCAR GN races were held on was a 0.5 mile dirt track located near NC SR73 in the north part of Concord. I lived in Concord and drove by the Old Speedway road for years. 8. Terry posted: 08.22.2015 - 9:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A look at a Concord map will show that Old Speedway and Hwy 73 do not intersect. No even close. Old Speedway Ts at Poplar Tent. My best-case information is Speedway #1 (1956-64) was located very near the intersection of Village and Exchange Drs - - Afton Pub & Pizza is on that land presently. But then again I could be wrong. Open to revision. 11. Aldo posted: 08.24.2015 - 6:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Looking www.historicaerials.com i found these 1965 aerial views. There's a track on "Old Speedway Road" http://s22.postimg.org/rduhmhjz5/Concord_Speedway.jpg BUT, looking the track, it seems abandoned (maybe it is the 1956-1959 track) http://postimg.org/image/9n3uuj1cj/ Near Poplar Tent Road there's nothing closed to an oval. http://s2.postimg.org/jen0z1ikp/Corcord_III.jpg The question is: "Old Concord Speedway" was actually one or two different tracks? 12. Aldo posted: 08.24.2015 - 6:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Some people say that the "Old Concord Speedway" was actually two different tracks. Take a look here: http://stockcar.racersreunion.com/forum/topics/old-concord-speedway-billy-barbara-scott-postings It seems like the "Triangle Concord Speedway" near Highway 601 is the third "Concord Speedway" and the second one was located located very near the intersection of Village and Exchange Drs. NASCAR Grand National Division races between 1962 and 1964 were helded there but 1956-1959 races were probably helded at the first "Concord Speedway", located somewhere down the Old Speedway Drive between Montgrove Pl NW and Poplar Tent Road. 13. _Pale_Writer_ posted: 08.24.2015 - 7:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) If my memory serves me correctly, I think I remember Dink Widenhouse telling me there were actually three dirt tracks operating in the Concord area in the 1950s-early 60s. One was named Harris Speedway (not to be confused with Harris Speedway in Harris, NC.) The dirt track that ran most recently was in the area of Eva Drive off Poplar Tent Road. It was last operated by Henry Furr. He closed it down in the 1980s and built the asphalt track on Hwy 601. That is the latest incarnation of Concord Speedway. 14. Look at this picture: http://s7.postimg.org/4xnhbs397/New_Concord_Speedway.jpg From www.historicaerials.com you can see the 1965 speedway near Eva Drive. Nowadays there is a street called "Speedway Drive" that was the access road to the speedway. The track itself was located in the land now occupied by Channing Circle. This track was known as Harris Speed way (not confuse it with Harris Speedway in Harris, NC) because the owner was Roy Harris. Greg Fielden's NASCAR Encyclopedia tells that this Concord Speedway was also known as New Concord Speedway (I called here Concord Speedway II), so I guess there was previously another "Concord Speedway". That one (I call it here Oldest Concord Speedway or Concord Speedway I) seems to be located in the street that nowadays is called "Old Speedway Road". In fact, the 1965 aerial view shows an old oval full of bushes, so it's difficult that NASCAR ran on that track back in the '50's. I guess this oldest track was also known as Widenhouse-Cadwell Speedway. The newest Concord Speeway (Concord Speedway III or Little Tricky Triangle) is that one near Midland. At the end of all this, I think that all 12 NASCAR Grand National Division races were helded at the New Concord Speedway/Harris Speedway/Concord Speedway II down the Channing Circle and that there was never a racing track near Exchange Road and Village Drive. As usual, open to revision. 15. Andy U posted: 12.08.2018 - 9:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Uggghhh.....My mother was th4e Tax Collector in Concord and my father was a police leiutenant. I went to the races at the dirt track when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s. And I can't find it anywhere...USGS, historic maps...nada. But stay tuned, I WILL find it. 16. The USGS map from Kannapolis NC, dated 1969 shows it plain as day. It is near the right edge of the map about halfway down. Between HWY 73 and Poplar Tent Rd. If you look on Google Earth it will be under Channing Circle, Concord NC 28027 Overlaying it would put the 4th turn halfway between Poplar Grove Church and the bend of HWY 73 southward. Right in the dark green clump of trees inside Channing Circle. As for the "First" Concord track...? 17. Really sad for me as "CMP" this was my home track. 22. A posted: 09.24.2019 - 8:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hard to believe this track is closing. It sounds like it has a long history as a kind of proving ground for aspiring NASCAR drivers. It is featured very prominently in the book "Racing While Black" by Leonard Miller. There also seems to have been lots of Bandalero racing on the shorter track in recent years. 23. A posted: 09.24.2019 - 8:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I see now that there were two different modern Concord tracks...the one that closed very recently and the one that hosted Grand National races. They were about 14 miles apart. The newer track must not have hosted any series included on this site. 24. There is a large grove of trees, and one can maybe discern a slight bank where the bleachers were. It just amazes me how all traces of a fairly large facility like this can be gone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
