The speedway is a .538 mile semi-banked asphaltic oval track. The NASCAR Busch Series (now the Nationwide Series) raced at Myrtle Beach Speedway from 1988 to 2000. Track built in 1958. Originally 1/2 mile dirt track. Paved in 1971, back to dirt in 1976, paved again in 1977. NASCAR Grand National (current Sprint Cup) events held here 1958-1965. A few Busch Series (current Nationwise) events held here in mid-1990s. 2. The TNT monster truck racing series held an event here in 1990 with a drag racing course and crushed cars sent up along pit road and the frontstretch. The truck King Kong III, a 1988 Ford driven by Steve Cain, was racing in the pit road lane when it got up on two wheels at the end of a race, clipped then jumped the pit wall, clipped and destroyed a Unocal 76 sign, then flipped over and landed atop two BRAND NEW police cars parked at the end of the track, destroying both of them. Cain walked away but King Kong III was totaled beyond repair. 6. Why does the Hooters Pro Cup/CARS Series list the track length as half a mile? 7. "Little E" had likely yet to pick up that nickname when he made his inaugural trip to victory lane at the wheel of the #3 Mom'N Pops / Western Steer Chevrolet Lumina late model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WqZQXL9Z3I Three generations of Earnhardt have won at this track. Dale Earnhardt was the 1978 track champion at Myrtle Beach right before he jumped full-time to Cup and Ralph Earnhardt was also a winner here. 8. "The Myrtle Beach market is hotter than ever and the Speedway is sitting in the center of the most sought after real estate in the area." 10. A potential purchase was contingent on the rezoning process to allow for development of the facility. According to Zacharias, that process is currently slated to conclude by the end of August, leading to the updated event schedule. "It is all based on rezoning in the area. Right now, it looks as though, based on the scheduling of rezoning, that will be the final race if and when the rezoning is approved. If, for some reason, it moves a month or two back, but it looks like based on the timing that is the date. If it doesn't work out on the zoning side or something doesn't jive with the county, the date could move back a month or two." (It was scanned for iRacing a few years ago so it will live on in that form.) 11. Its promotional group has purchased nearby Florence Motor Speedway. The show will go on there starting on Southern 500 weekend 15. Track will likely be turned into an extension of a subdivision that was developed behind the facility a few years ago. 16. The event began as a NASCAR All-Pro race for three years but continued onward without that series, traditionally being run in mid-November throughout its duration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
