Berlin, MI changed it's name to Marne, MI during the massive anti-German sentiment that occured in the USA during World War I...ironically the Berlin track wasn't built in 1950 but still used the old name. Berlin was the stopping grounds of NASCAR champion Johnny Benson Jr. before he hit it big. Tim Steele and Bob Senneker are other stock car champion graduates of the track. 2. A shame, personally I have tried to go to Berlin three times now yet the races wound up being postponed (or cancelled, in this case) each time. 4. He was an announcer at a couple of Michigan short tracks. 5. Why? Because local hero Johnny Benson, Jr. came over from the NASCAR Busch Series to play ringer with his old compatriots in ASA that night and scored his final victory in the series later that evening to the roars of the fans. The NASCAR Busch title-bound Benson bested ASA favorite Scott Hansen and fellow Michigander Dave Sensiba, the night's polesitter, to get the win. Benson made just three ASA starts in 1995 but the last two at his hometrack Berlin both ended in victories. He never raced in ASA again afterward. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
