The first ever race was run on September 26, 1903. At that time it was a 1 mile dirt track that was located about ten feet from the grand river. In 1966 the track was forced to close and be demolished to make room for the 131 expressway. 2. While this track was demolished in 1966 it wasn't the end of professional racing in Grand Rapids. In 1998 and 1999 a street course was set up downtown for the SCCA Trans-Am series' "West Michigan Grand Prix" and its variety of undercard races. 4. 23andJoe posted: 07.30.2016 - 10:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 1/2mi track was paved in 1964; a 1/4mi track also operated, paved c.1961. The 1/2mi and 1/4mi tracks were built in 1950; the original 1-mi track operated 1903-1937 and was demolished in 1948 for an airport, before the site was turned back into a racetrack. 5. If you look at the 1967 USGS Cedar Springs SW map you will see a curved change in elevation. My trained eyes tell me that might be the banking of the second turn. That would be just north of North Park St on the west side of the river. Final answer....you can pick out the track based on Park St, the river and the RR tracks. Look at the photos here https://www.mlive.com/autoracing/index.ssf/2016/07/grand_rapids_speedrome_still_m.html If you go to the Speedrome Historical Society group on facebook you can see a blowup of the before and after track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
