It operated as a dirt track until 1953. The track was paved in 1954. The Milwaukee Mileā??s premier distinction is as the oldest operating motor speedway in the world, hosting at least one auto race every year since 1903. The track is located at the grounds for the Wisconsin State Fair. The track has held events sanctioned by major sanctioning bodies, such as the American Automobile Association, USAC, NASCAR, CART/Champ Car World Series, and the IndyCar Series. There have also been many races in regional series such as ARTGO. The track started out as a one-mile (1.6 km) private horse racing track on or before 1876. In 1891, the site was purchased by the Agricultural Society of the State of Wisconsin to create a permanent site for the Wisconsin State Fair (which it still is). The first motorsports event was held on September 11, 1903. William Jones of Chicago won a five lap speed contest, and set the first track record with a 72 second, 50 mph (80 km/h) lap. There were 24-hour endurance races in 1907 and 1908. Louis Disbrow won the first 100-mile (160 km) event in 1915, averaging 62.5 mph (100.6 km/h). 2. martin-n-rusty posted: 06.02.2010 - 8:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To the site, since this track is not hosting races for Nationwide and Trucks anymore, im sure this can be moved to the "Former Tracks" part of their respective pages 3. During the State Fair today, they park cars all over out here, and it's fun to drive in and out right on the track surface. 8. They put $$$ over racing quality and it's hurt them ever since. 12. That's the one track on the list that was done in by something other than NASCAR greed. 13. Anonymous posted: 08.08.2018 - 11:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I don't think the Milwaukee Mile is going to be turned in a parking lot unless there is major changes for the Wisconsin State Fair. The Wisconsin State Fair runs 11 days a year and it includes concerts. The Concerts have multiple areas, but it includes the race track for that. The fair uses part of the race track as the main stage and uses the Front Stretch bleachers as seating for the concert. The Main Stage is where the big acts perform. 15. John posted: 08.09.2018 - 12:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @14 It's being paved over for something, at least according to Robin Miller who does work for Indycar on (I believe) NBC. If I wasn't lazy I would find the article. 16. While it initially doesn't look like the Fair Board are interested in bringing NASCAR or IndyCar back, citing expensive sanctioning fees, this track isn't going anywhere without a fight. A group called Save the Milwaukee Mile has been working for more than a year and a few trying to bring attention to revitalizing the track. They have a website at savethemile.org. 17. ARCA Midwest Tour was featured, with races from the Mid-Am Stock Car Series, Midwest Truck Series, and Vintage stock cars and indy cars. Fun day, rain stayed away, and a nice crowd. Hopefully there can be more Milwaukee Mile racing in the future. 20. A posted: 02.20.2020 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Featured in the great Mark Knopfler song, "Speedway at Nazareth" 21. Then again, now you got me thinking how many auto racing centric sonngs exist? I can only think of two or three off the top of my head, that being one of them. 22. RaceFanX posted: 02.21.2020 - 9:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 More than you think. Besides "Speedway at Nazareth" there's Jim Croce's "Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)," Cletus T. Judd's "I Love NASCAR" (a parody tune of "I Love This Bar"), the Charlie Daniels Band's "Stroker's Theme" as the title song from the film "Stoker Ace," and Alabama's glowing "Richard Petty Fans" it sang for the King's retirement in 1992. There's also been some efforts by NASCAR drivers to sing with their tunes usually being about the sport. There was a full album called "NASCAR Goes Country" in 1975 with a list of future Hall of Famers belting out tunes like Bobby Allison's "Watch Out for the Matador" (he drove one at the time). Another album of NASCAR drivers singing songs mostly about the sport came out in 1983 with "Stock Car Racing's Entertainers of the Year." These days it's probably best remembered for Dale Earnhardt's performance of a country tune called "Hard Charger." He made the right call sticking to driving. There were a bunch of songs about fast cars and racing them in the 1960s; "409," "Hey Little Cobra," etc. "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" are both humorous tunes about street racing. Later on ZZ Top's "Manic Mechanic" is about a racer accepting a challenge from another one then trash talking him. "Greased Lightning" from the musical "Grease" is about building up a wicked car for drag racing. Bob Segar's "Night Moves" is more about growing up but has lyrics about "trying to make some front page driving news" in reference to an American Graffiti-style street race. "The Distance" by Cake seems to be about a car racer who keeps going long after the race has ended. Alan Jackson's cover of "Who's Cheatin' Who" isn't about racing, the song is about possible infidelity, but the music video was NASCAR themed with about every top Ford NASCAR driver of the time in it. 23. Even without major events, there has been regular activity at the track such as SCCA Track Days, public Street Drag nights, and other car events like "Motormania," a car show and burnout event. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
