Gateway International Raceway is a race track in Madison, Illinois, USA,
just minutes from Downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It hosts a NASCAR
Nationwide Series event and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on
a 1.25 mile (2 kilometer) oval, a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) infield Road Course
used by SCCA and various car clubs, and also has a quarter-mile drag
strip that hosts an annual National Hot Rod Association event. The
facilities are owned by Dover Motorsports, a group that also owns
Memphis Motorsports Park, Dover International Speedway and the Nashville
Superspeedway among others.

The first major event held at the facility was a CART series held on
Saturday May 24, 1997, the day before the Indy Racing League's
Indianapolis 500. Rather than scheduling a race directly opposite the
Indy 500 (as they had done in 1996 with the U.S. 500), CART scheduled
Gateway the day before to serve as their Memorial Day weekend open-wheel
alternative without direct conflict. After a couple years, track
management grew increasingly dissatisfied with its apparent use, as seen
by some, as a political pawn or statement by CART and IRL/USAC and its
poor attendance as fans generally chose to travel to the Indy 500 for
the weekend instead. For 2000, the race was moved to the fall. In 2001,
its was dropped from the CART series schedule, and switched alliances to
the Indy Racing League. After mediocre attendance, the event was dropped
altogether after 2003.

The 1.25-mile (2.01 km) oval is a favorite of many of the drivers who
race there due to the unique shape and different degrees of banking in
each corner. Turns 1 & 2 have characteristics similar to New Hampshire
Motor Speedway while Turns 3 & 4 are similar to Phoenix International
Raceway and the track's egg shape mimics the legendary Darlington
Raceway. Several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams test at GIR in
preparation for these events.

Gateway will not have any Nascar Events in 2011. Dover Motorsports wants
sell the track. It is another Race track that Dover Motorsports that got
a rid of.

There's no demand for the land (it's in a terrible area), but even less
for the track. I wouldn't be surprised if ISC buys it and just bulldozes
it to prevent future competition.

Err, it has been leased by a local developer and (briefly) racer, Curtis
Francois, who has two races profiled on this site.

Why on earth would you change your name from such a glowing, luxurious
phrase like "Gateway International Raceway" to a drab name like "Gateway
Motorsports Park?" I mean I know the latter might actually be more
descriptive but come on

Ah, one of my favorite tracks of all-time.. It's a shame NASCAR stopped
participating there. This isn't the first time NASCAR has taken away one
of my favorite tracks.. Next thing you know, they're gonna take away
Richmond, Martinsville, Daytona or Talladega -- those are probably my
four favorite tracks ever

For the 4 CART races, the series used the actual track length of 1.27
miles.

A very fun and unique track but as post 4 mentioned, it's in a terrible
area. Madison, IL is directly adjacent to East St. Louis, IL, the most
dangerous city in America.

But I'm glad that the Trucks started racing again and that the speedway
wasn't left to rot. I think the lower series needs more non-Cup
companion tracks and races.

Home of CART's "Day before the 500" races in 1997, 1998, and 1999. The
new Gateway race replaced the infamous Indy 500/US 500 duel that only
took place in 1996.

IndyCar is rumored to return to Gateway in 2017. Steps have been taken
that direction, and there were rumors that the track could even be on
the 2016 schedule.

As much as I would love for IndyCar to return to The Glen, they
desperately need another oval on the schedule so I hope they go to Gateway.

This track needs to return to the Xfinity Series now that they've hosted
NHRA, IndyCar, and Camping World Trucks under the new ownership. Always
puts on a good show.

Great show Saturday night with a really good crowd for the IndyCar
return. Great race too. Hopefully we can look forward to more of the
same for many years to come :)

I'm glad IndyCar is back, but that was not a good race. I think there
were only 1 or 2 lead changes on track under green, and Penske cars led
240/248 laps. I'm a Newgarden fan, and I'm really happy he won, but
IndyCar has been lacking on the short ovals this year.

Will host a East-West combination event later this year known as the
Midwest Melee 150. It will be 150 laps, 187.5 miles, and will contain a
halfway break.

Maybe I'm biased because I live near this racetrack, but last night's
Truck race was one of the best races I've ever seen, and I've been to
roughly 40 NASCAR and Indycar races. The racing was side by side the
entire time, the repave was perfect, and the stands were packed.

Am I wrong to say this place needs an Xfinity and Cup race again?

Also, huge shoutout to Curtis Francois buying this place when it was
closed and bringing Gateway back to life.

I'm convinced that Cup will be at Gateway in 2021. I don't see a company
investing in a track solely for IndyCar and lower-level NASCAR events.

To put some weight behind my words, I'll donate $10.00 to the Joey
Logano foundation (a driver I strongly dislike) if I'm wrong.

Iowa and Gateway are the two most potentials to have Cup dates in my
opinion. Could happen.

As far as the name change, at least it's not as bad as Phoenix
International Raceway changing to ISM Raceway... Phoenix is one of my
favorite words to say in general so I'll never call it ISM.

@32 I think you're right. Why else would a big company buy the naming
rights to a IndyCar and Truck racetrack? I really hope Cup goes to
Gateway in 2021. From where Gateway was in 2011 to now, it's a complete
180. Only minor updates are really needed, such as improved parking and
reopening the stands in Turns 1-2.

In 19 truck series races at Gateway, there have been 18 different
winners. Only Ted Musgrave has more than one win at Gateway.

30th, and will run a double header with INDYCAR.

It should be really interesting to see how this track races with 3
different tire brands on this rare oval size

NASCAR Trucks: Goodyear

ARCA: General Tire

IndyCar: Firestone

I am not sure how often something like this has happened but I am
guessing not very if at all in racing history

Gateway owner Curtis Francois has lobbied for a NASCAR Cup date in the
past and they've had discussions, but it didn't come together for '21.

That doesn't mean it's not an option in the future. There has been a
considerable amount of dialogue.
