The track was designed to host a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and has hosted NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series races, as well as IRL IndyCar Series and Indy Lights races. However, NASCAR officials have refused any discussion of a Sprint Cup Series race being moved there. 2. But I say it should be added once Jeff Gordon retires, because I can tell you that he may not win there and with Homestead left. Better add it in 2015. 3. Buddy Lazier won the first IRL race at the track in 2000, Greg Biffle won the first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race here in 2000, and Tim Steele won the first ever ARCA race at Kentucky in 2000. The NASCAR Nationwide Series came to the track one year later, with Kevin Harvick winning the inagural series event in 2001. It's been one of the more notable tracks that NASCAR has run on without the Cup Series making any trips. The track has pushed hard to host a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race for years and finally got it's wish as the Cup Series will take to this track for the first time in July 2011. 5. Kellen posted: 06.27.2013 - 9:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Remember seeing this track being built in late 1999. Went to all the busch races from 2002-2006 and most truck races 2001-2005. This use to be "the track" for cup teams to test before it became a cup track. The cup teams came there so often the track built a small bleacher behind the gift shop outside turn 3 so fans could watch. 6. Evan posted: 12.30.2013 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) No offense to Kentucky, its an awesome track but it is too similar to the tracks already on the circuit, Chicago, Vegas(flat), Kansas, Michigan, California, et al. It does produce some good racing though but the traffic tie-ups as well as ticket processing had fans up in arms. Luckily things were fixed in time for the next race there. Its still fairly new to the Cup guys, especially veterans who never ran it, it favors drivers who have ran there in the past and there is a good contingent of drivers in the series who have ran there, Harvick, Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Jamie MacMurray among others. Those are the ones to watch at Kentucky because they ran it in their Busch careers. 8. I like the idea of less downforce, the less downforce you have the more unstable the car will be, plus more off the throttle time in the corners. I believe the more unstable a race car is, the better the racing will be. 9. Also, turns 1 and 2 will be narrower, from 74 feet wide to 56 feet wide. Kentucky also will be using a curing process during the repave which hopes to "age" the track in time for the July weekend. I'm not sure what exactly that process involves. The track also hopes to improve draining, add 3200 ft of SAFER barrier, and will address weepers. 13. Let's see how good the race is in July. 14. murb posted: 01.05.2016 - 6:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yeah, it sounds like an interesting idea to have the two ends of the track have different banking and widths. RaceFanX posted: 07.15.2020 - 6:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kentucky's own Darrell Waltrip helped with some of the design work for this track even though he never raced here. There's a bronze statue of a late 1980s era DW celebrating a win, even replicating him in his Tide uniform, outside the track's office building. The track when viewed from the air also features a giant easter egg honoring DW. The speedway is a modern D-shaped oval but in a neat tribute its three pit garage buildings are built so they form a giant "W" in the infield. A 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series race here ended in a post-race fistfight between drivers Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson. During the week after the race a cheeky race joking around listed the track on Google Maps as being the home of a fictional restaurant called "Noah Gragson's Knuckle Sandwiches." 29. Cole Custer's rookie win is a close second. 34. Noah posted: 09.29.2020 - 7:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 2015 and 2016 both stick out as really good races. 2015 was the first ever low downforce race and an incredible battle for the win in the last 50-60 laps. 2016 also was a great race with an exciting fuel mileage finish. Other than those,no real highlights for it on the cup series side. 35. Corey posted: 09.30.2020 - 12:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kentucky Speedway was the most recent facility to be added to the NASCAR Cup schedule, but its stay would only hosts 10 races in 10 years. You need to go back to 1981 to find a track that host less races, (Texas World Speedway, 8 races over 12 years) and 1980 to find a track with the same amount of time (Ontario Motor Speedway, 9 races in 10 years). 36. Also, SMI putting down the PJ1 didn't really help the track in the long run. Yeah, the racing product never has been top notch, but the track wasn't devoid of notable moments. Go watch the 2015 race, one that's underrated in my opinion, also the finishes for its last two Cup races were epic. While the track wasn't really good, it had the potential to be good before the unnecessary reconfiguration. Oh well, maybe IndyCar can save this place from dormancy or perhaps even demolition. Then again, this may be a personal bias, I mean, I am a Kentuckian. 40. PucciMan posted: 11.19.2020 - 9:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @39 I'm sad that it was dropped too. I thought the racing there was good. Also that wasn't PJ1 they put down, they used traction compound instead. 41. Foote posted: 11.19.2020 - 9:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The racing product stunk, but I hope this facility is able to continue and not be demolished. Seems like more and more tracks are going extinct while there are few new facilities being built. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
