Champ Car came here three times to race but only the first two races were run to completion. The third race took the green flag on August 27, 1916 but the event was marred by a horrific crash in Turn 1 on the opening lap that resulted in 11 of the 14 cars entered being involved after race leader Jack Peacock hit the outside wall and flipped over right into the path of the other cars. Two died as a result with Peacock crushed to death and Andy Burt's riding mechanic Marion Arnold decapitated. Peacock's riding mechanic F. E. Marquette was badly injured and not expected to survive his injuries afterward. The race was cancelled immediately afterward and the Champ Cars never returned. The Automobile Journal called the crash "the worst mixup ever at an American race track." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
