At the time it was a .5 Mile Dirt Oval ran by Frank Funk. The track was paved a year later and is now called Winchester Speedway. Winchester Speedway is a half-mile paved oval motor racetrack in Winchester, Indiana, approximately 90 miles (145 km) northeast of Indianapolis. It seats 4000 spectators. It is also known as the "World's Fastest 1/2 mile". The track's 37 degree banking is one of the steepest in motor sports. Some of the most famous racers in the world have raced at Winchester including Ryan Newman and Sarah Fisher. The track's signature event is the annual running of the "Winchester 400." Former winners during the first 36 editions include: Bob Senneker (7 wins), Mike Cope (3), Mike Eddy (2), Mark Martin (2), Gary St. Amant (2), Butch Miller, Rusty Wallace, Ted Musgrave, Glenn Allen Jr., Tim Steele, Scot Walters, and Hank Parker Jr. 2. chris o posted: 08.29.2012 - 8:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) track still active 3. It looks like the wall comes up out of the ground so that a car could ramp up into the crowd. I only notice this becasue in my research, that happened at a track in Dayton (I think) and 3 spectators dies along wiht the driver. There is a photo out there that shows an open wheel car flying straight up over 20 feet. Same sort of thing in 1955 where a car launched and killed 85 or so in France(?) 5. rm posted: 12.10.2018 - 3:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Could have been Dayton. At one point in the 50s, Dayton, Winchester & Salem were all owned by the same guy and he made them all ultra-high-banked sister tracks until Dayton was demolished. 6.
