It has been called the "Fastest 1/2 mile (plus 210 feet) in the world". The track has held events for NASCAR, AAA, MARC, ARCA, ASA, USAC, etc. The track was opened in June 1934 as a flat "D shaped" 5/8 mile dirt track. The original track was a "copy" of the ASCOT Speedway. By 1986 the track, was rusted and forgotten. Track is now a Landfill. A Website has been created to revive the Speedway. http://wthompson4.sports.officelive.com/default.aspx 2. Jimmy Florian won in a Ford and it was the first of many NASCAR Cup victories for the Blue Oval brand. 4. Results of the race, as well as many other ARCA races that this site is missing, can be found here. https://sites.google.com/site/hscrrarchive/arca-1/1953-marc-season/1953-marc-01 5. rm posted: 10.04.2018 - 12:04 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Dayton was a high banked half mile that was built to be a clone to Salem, mostly, as well as Winchester. It was best known for its 500 lap Dayton 500 ARCA races. The name, as should be pointed out, predates the Daytona 500 by several years. Reportedly the steepness of the banks was achieved by burying trolley cars in the turns. 6. Might be able to make out the banking of the turns on the north side. USGS Miamisburg OH map, 1955 shows it plain as day. 7. This must be the most desirable area, as within a mile or so of the former track there are two prisons, two landfills and a sewage plant. 8. When racing ceased for good they just started dumping trash in the infield and slowly filling it up. Over time it became a full blown landfill, but from what people I know that live in the area tell me the track was never actually torn down. It's just under 20 feet of trash. 9. Sometime in the 90s or early 2000s though the site was filled with clay, flattening out the land. It might still be there, just under clay and trash, but some rumors also say when it was filled with clay it was demolished. 10. rm posted: 11.01.2020 - 7:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) While always listed as a half-mile, the track was technically .540 miles in length. Hosted a 600-lap MARC race (now known as ARCA) in September 1962, won by series legend Iggy Katona with a margin of victory of 6 laps over runner-up Jack Farris. The race was speculated at the time to be the longest-ever scheduled at a half-mile track. That may not be true overall, given the popularity of enduro races at many a short track, but it is almost certainly true when it comes to nationally-touring stock car series - The Third Turn cites it as the race with the highest lap count in its records. The plan even called for all drivers entered to start, a number variously reported as 40, 42 or 45 cars. Shockingly, the race saw just two cautions, going green all the way up to lap 423! The race was marred by a late crash involving Dudley Stacy and Ken Toole in which the drivers collided off of turn 4 and spun down into the pit lane, smashing into the cars of Jack Bowsher and Ken Reeder that were receiving service. Three crew members as well as Reeder were injured by the accident, one of them so severely that one of the mechanic's legs had to be amputated at the hospital. Reeder escaped with injuries to his chest and legs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
