When i was into OW racing i liked watching races on Burke Airport. 2. Burke is not the main airport for Cleveland, that's Cleveland Hopkins International Airport which also technically lies with the city limits, and as such it has not had any regular commerical service since 2006. Instead it is mainly used for business jets and charter flights (it's a favorite of pro sports teams because of how close it is to the city's various arenas). Burke, named for former US senator Thomas A. Burke who had previously been the Mayor of Cleveland from 1945-1953, has two main runways with 6L/24R and 6R/24L. They are capable of being used for anything up to Boeing 737 or 757 jets as well as the Airbus A320. Both runways and the airports taxiways were used in the race track layout requiring a full closure of the airport on race weekend. At one point there were plans for the race to switch from being a CART race to an IRL race for the year 2000 with the track being reconfigured from a road course to a 1.2-mile oval to fit the IRL's no road course requirement of the time. The plan fell through when it was discovered the new pavement needed to create the proposed oval configuration turns would have required FAA approval and local officials found it excessive as it did nothing to improve regular airport operations on non-race weekends. The plan was abandoned and the Grand Prix of Cleveland remained a CART event until the series' 2007 termination. The 2003 running of the CART race was a day-into-night event using temporary lighting. All other runnings were traditional daytime events. 5. It was a cool track, though both years I went to the CCWS race up there were ungodly hot. 9.
