Very high G-Forces I assume. If you crash here usually you crash big. 2. It is co-located with a harness racing track, Dover Downs, and shares the complex with Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. At one time both the entertainment complex and the speedway were owned by the publicly traded Dover Downs Entertainment, but they have since been split into two separate companies. 3. The two cup races at Dover used to be 500 mile races before the fall 1997 race. The two cup races are 400 mile races now. 4. It is so easy to over drive the corners and a LOT of the lap time is spent in the corners. The fastest way to get around the track is to brake early before going into the corner entry and then go full throttle as soon as you can. Sacrifice your entry speed to gain speed off the corners. Pit road is pretty difficult to get onto because there is a big transition in banking and a very narrow apron. 6. But in my opinion it has it all, if you like wrecks it has wrecks, if you like great racing it has great racing. It also has one of my favorite trophies in NASCAR. Easily my favorite track! 8. It didn't take as the "Monster Mile" nickname proved too popular to replace. This is the only track in the United States that hosts both car and horse racing. The equines use a smaller track in the infield of the auto's oval. Both tracks used to be named Dover Downs but that name now only applies to the horse track. 11. Phoenix at least has good restarts. 20. possum posted: 06.15.2019 - 9:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @19 - Dover is a much harder track to drive than Homestead or Kansas. It's the only banked track where you drive downhill entering the corners, and uphill coming out of the corner; it's very easy to get into the corner too fast. Most of the drivers prefer the challenge of Dover over the comparatively boring tracks at Homestead and Kansas. 21. It is part of a multi-year deal. In addition to this year, Drydene is locked in for the sponsorship of the track's second race for 2020 and 2021. It is the 2021 race that is of note. The contracts with all of the tracks currently on the Cup schedule expire after the 2020 season. It has created uncertainty for several of the venues that could normally count one one or two visits a year from the series. The fact that Dover has a sponsor deal for a race that is not guaranteed does show the Monster Mile is capable of having financial stability. "We are not concerned about it at this point," Dover International Speedway President and CEO Mike Tatoian said. "We have great history obviously with 50 years. We provide a tremendous amount of racing and we are in a nice media market in the northeast so we feel comfortable going forward past 2020." Staring in 1971, Dover has hosted two NASCAR Cup races each season. The 2021 schedule is expected to be announced next spring. 23. It was fun when they called this always called this place "Dover Downs: The Monster Mile," just short of rolled off the tongue and promoted the rarity of having both car and horse racing at the same facility. Just calling it Dover doesn't have quite the same feel. 24. Corey posted: 10.05.2019 - 5:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) So Richard Petty was the first asphalt winner at Dover on July 6th, 1969. Dover Motorsports CEO Mike Tatoian said the move was intended to help improve the experience for NASCAR fans who attend races at the Monster Mile. He noted sports venues across the country have experienced declines in attendance and the latest reduction in seating matches that trend. "All stadiums now, whether they're NASCAR, NHL, NFL, Major League Baseball...as they're being built or renovated they're being built more intimate, with fewer seats," he said. Seating capacity at the Monster Mile has periodically dropped over the years after peaking at 135,000 grandstand seats in 2001. Two more NASCAR series races are scheduled to happen next year at the Monster Mile, though they are the final races left on a five-year contract. Tatoian said he is optimistic about the track's future and discussions to continue holding races in Dover.? Several years ago, the track removed more seating in turns 2 and 3. 26. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 10.25.2019 - 1:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Still think Dover may lose a date in the near future. 27. This indicates NASCAR apparently considering not racing in Charlotte weekend prior to Memorial Day so I'd guess all-star race could move or be part of condensed Charlotte sked. According to its sanction agreement, Dover's 2021 date -- whether it is May 16 or May 23 -- will be determined by June 30. Dover's deal for 2021 Cup race weekend is a 1-year deal, which is expected to be standard across the industry for current tracks. Purse/sanction fee is approx $7.8 million. TV money is approx $15.1 million (with about $4.2 million of that going into the purse). Dover 2021 sanction shows new wording in repairs/upgrade section (assume same for all tracks): "Promoter will use commercially reasonable e efforts to provide wireless connectivity to fans attending the event within. the grandstand seating area, infield and midways." According to Nashville and Dover sanction agreements, NASCAR has added a minimum attendance clause to its sanction agreements for promoters to use best efforts to ensure 70% capacity. NEM in this clause stands for NASCAR Event Management. 31. possum posted: 06.03.2020 - 7:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @30 - that last bit is interesting. Mile501 posted: 06.04.2020 - 6:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) In an era where attention spans are shortening, some races have been shortened (Pocono, Fontana), and some drivers are even advocating for shorter races, I really can't see them lengthening Dover to 500 miles. Cars now are vastly faster that the 70s - just look at pole speeds - but race durations are just as long, or longer. Between stage breaks and 7 lap cautions for any minor spin (gotta get the commercials in) there's a hell of a lot of time used up that didn't occur in the old days. 37. Which they rounded down to 312. I recall some discussion at the time whether it should be 312 or 313 (or 300 and call it "close enough"), but the track was determined to have 500 in the race name, and NASCAR was determined not to have a 500 mile race. 41.
