The Meadowland's course used two completely different layouts over the
years...

The original Meadowlands used from 1984-1987 was a 1.682 mile layout
that actually included two overpass crossings of a highway (it appears
the highway was usually closed during races though).

The second one used from 1988-1991 was a 1.217 mile somewhat more
oval-like course surrounding the Izod Center (then called Brendan Byrne
Arena and later know as Continental Airlines Arena), which at the time
was the home of the NHL's New Jersey Devils and the NBA's New Jersey
Nets (both have since moved).

Marlboro sponsored this race and initially the plan was for the
Meadowlands round to be a big New York City race for CART at a time when
the series was in its prime. Ultimately while this street race was
successful enough to last eight years it never quite drew the desired
crowds or profit leading to the race's abandonment after 1991. The goal
was to replace it in 1992 or later 1993 with a spectacular new street
course right in Manhattan at the World Trade Center but the new Marlboro
Grand Prix of New York never came to be after cost concerns and politics
did it in before the first running ever took place.

NASCAR officials spoke to the organizers of this race track about
bringing a stock car race of some kind onto the track here (possibly
with NASCAR's proposed new road-course focused L-R race cars that were
planned for the Cup series. Nothing came about from it though,
especially as the NASCAR L-R program stalled out. Much of the roads used
to to set up this track still exists although the area around the IZOD
Center in the track's infield now contains the American Dream
Meadowlands mall and indoor amusement parks.
