The property's use for training horses dates back to late 1890s with the track being built in 1926. The track only held occasional auto races. It's best remembered as the birth place of the Hambletonian Stakes, the first leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters. That race moved away in 1956 (it's now at the Meadowlands but it first moved to another car/horse racing track, Illinois' DuQuoin State Fairgrounds) and the track faded away, holding its last races in the 1970s and having its facilities demolished in the early 1980s. The old track surface still somewhat exists, you can see it in satellite photography, but it is no longer usable as a state highway now cuts through the southern part of the track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
