Unser1 posted: 07.29.2020 - 9:23 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The Cactus Derby was a Los Angeles to Phoenix rally race that was run annually from 1908 to 1914. Only the 1909 race was a Champ Car points race, making it the only city to city overland race ever to be a race in the series. Most of this race took place in the desert, with few roads or gas stations, so teams had to carry fuel and spare parts with them. Spectators often followed the action on a specially-chartered train. The drivers even made an overnight stop, Needes, California was one location for this, so they would be able to drive better on the second day.
