The first public air show in history was also held at this track. The Morris Park race track was original built for horse racing and was one of America's premier tracks for it at a time. It hosted Triple Crown races including serving as the site of both the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes in 1890. The Belmont remained here until 1904 at which point the opening of the new Belmont Park (where the Belmont remains today) led to the end of horse racing at Morris Park. The track's 1905 conversion for auto racing wasn't successful and the City of New York took it over in 1907 for other uses. After a 1910 fire destroyed much of the track's facilities the land was redeveloped into the Bronx neighbor that to this day is known as Morris Park after the track that once stood there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
