After horse racing ended the track was rebuilt in 1915 into one of the United States pioneering super speedways and it featured both a true asphalt paved surface and a notable amount of banking (20 degrees) in the corners (much more like the tracks that followed compared to say the brick surface and flat corners at Indianapolis). The track eventually closed in 1924 after its grandstands burned to the ground and it was too pricey a prospect to rebuild them. The Rhode Island State Fairground took over the land and the property is now a subdivision. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
