I have a mild amount of evidence to state that this racetrack was NOT in Owego,NY as RR has but Oswego,NY. The racetrack located in Owego is a racetrack called Shangri-La, which was never called Wine Creek Racetrack. Rather this track below, was built on the Wine Creek horse track, giving substantial proof that this track below is where the race took place. The Oswego Speedway, located in Oswego New York, was built in 1951 when original owners Harry, George and William Caruso converted the one time Wine Creek Horse Track into a 3/8 mile dirt auto racing facility. The track was paved during 1952 and remained a 3/8 mile track until 1961 when it was enlarged to its current 5/8 mile size. The Oswego Speedway has been a continuously run weekly race track since it opened in August of 1951. The track was sold in April of 2004 to former speedway supermodified driver, Track and Classic Champion, Steve Gioia Jr. and Pat Furlong, Sr. whose son Greg has won Championships in both the limited and supermodified divisions at the speedway. The speedway has undergone vast capital improvements and renovations over the course of fifty plus years of existence and updates are constantly being made to keep it a state-of-the-art racing facility. It is mentioned in racing circles that the Oswego Speedway is the â??Indy of the Eastâ? as no fewer than a dozen of our past and present competitors have competed at the famed â??Brickyardâ? including two-time Indy 500 winner Gordon Johncock, along with former Budweiser International Classic winners Bentley Warren, Joe Gosek and Davey Hamilton. In addition to this; driver Jim Reed stated the race took place in Oswego, which can be located on link #2, page #2 http://www.oswegospeedway.com/TrackInfo/History/tabid/85/Default.aspx http://www.dirttrackdigest.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=25373&st=0 Nonetheless, the race took place on a 1/2 mile dirt track, and was won by Tim Flock. 2. This was the only NASCAR Grand National race held 3. Oswego East map On the 1954 map there is a track called Oswego Speedway that is in the same place as the one today. I think we can close the book on this cold case. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
