The Coney Island Jockey Club ran the track and in 1886 it became home to the first turf horse racing track in the United States, a one-mile turf course was built inside the large dirt oval replacing the track's steeplechase course. The horse track flopped out after the State of New York passed laws that virtually ban betting on horse races, while that ban was lifted by 1913 horses gave way to horsepower as this track was sold and the dirt track converted into a wooden board auto racing track. It's motorsport days would not last as the death of the track's majority shareholder in 1919 later led its closure and demise, the property was sold for residential real estate development and the complex plowed under so the land could be reused. 2.
