The track was designed with influence from Rusty Wallace and patterned after Richmond International Raceway, a short track where Wallace was very successful. It has over 25,000 permanent seats as well as a unique multi-tiered Recreational Vehicle viewing area along the backstretch. The track opened in September 2006 with the Soy Biodiesel 250, won by Woody Howard, for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Four Champions playoff. The Indy Racing League announced a race there on June 24, 2007, the Iowa Corn Indy 250, which was won by Dario Franchitti, who barely nipped Marco Andretti at the finish line. The track has secured a combined NASCAR Camping World East-West race where results will count towards both series' championships. [2] That race delivered a dramatic battle between 17-year old Joey Logano from the Busch East Series, who defeated Daytona 500 champion Kevin Harvick, 1998 West Series champion, who represented the West Series at the end of the race. The track has been awarded a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race in 2008, and a Nationwide Series race for 2009. It was announced on June 21, 2009 that the Indy Racing League will return to the track in 2010 and possibly 2011. 3. It is great race track and it has great ticket sales. 5. Brad posted: 03.31.2011 - 10:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) "This track needs to have a Cup date." I agree. Iowa, not Kentucky should have a Cup race. The racing is much better than Kentucky. 6. Richmond just seems like there is no room for exciting racing anywhere on the track in its current configuration and Kentucky has been awful since getting that Cup date that whined and complained to get. If I were in charge of NASCAR, I would do the following: Reconfigure Bristol to the old high bank single groove track it used to be Dump a race at Richmond and add Iowa in its place Dump the Kentucky race for a Rockingham race Dump Watkins Glen for Canadian Tire Dump Chicagoland for Road America Dump Indianapolis altogether and move to IRP or whatever the track is called now Dump New Hampshire for Mid-Ohio Drop a race each at Texas,Michigan, Pocono, and California and add in Atlanta, Rockingham, Milwaukee and Gateway 10. It was one of the best races I've seen in a long time, there was excellent competition all over the track, throughout the entire field, for the whole race. 11. Ryan posted: 06.17.2018 - 10:03 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @10 Yea, and it would have been even better without the stage cautions. Richmond provided great racing. Some guys were better on shorter runs and others on longer runs and then the race was turned off with the stage cautions. 12. #BowmanNation #TKNation posted: 06.17.2018 - 11:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 9. Canadianfan posted: 06.17.2020 - 7:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 There is a rumour that NASCAR is not allowing any standalone events for the rest of the year for Xfinity and Trucks. It hasn't been confirmed yet but it probably will be soon. I mean we already know the Top 3 schedule through all of July that doesn't exactly give many more dates until the playoffs for those lower series. 23. Anon posted: 06.17.2020 - 12:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Seems like a missed opportunity to run a Cup race there if you ask me. They should've run a triple header there, maybe a quadruple header with double Xfinity races. Just make it clear that running Cup there in 2020 guarantees nothing for 2021, etc. 24. Canadianfan posted: 06.18.2020 - 5:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) From Nate Ryan: With proper social distancing applied, series and track officials are expecting a maximum crowd of 5,000 to 6,000 for both nights at Iowa (for the IndyCar race). 25. Anonymous posted: 06.25.2020 - 3:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Does anyone know what the Xfinity series is doing the weekend of August 1-2? Cup is announced to be running Loudon on August 2, but there's no Xfinity race announced that weekend. To me anyway, it makes total sense to send Xfinity and Trucks to Iowa that weekend (scheduled for Xfinity Iowa anyway), and run several events. They could run 2 Xfinity races, 1 Truck race, and 1 ARCA race. This would actually put the Xfinity series within 1 race of the full schedule, and there are plenty of options to make up the 1 missed race after that as well. 27. Canadianfan posted: 06.25.2020 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 NASCAR has already cancelled Iowa's races back in May. 28. At first, it seemed like NASCAR didn't want to travel further away, but now they've got races scheduled in Pocono, Texas & Kansas. 29. George_Costanza posted: 06.25.2020 - 8:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Even Gateway is keeping their Truck race. In fact, it's going to be the same day as the INDYCAR race, so it's completely possible to run both series in the same weekend. 31. JSPorts43 posted: 06.25.2020 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm very glad Gateway has kept their Truck date. That will be a standalone, then. Of course, it doesn't do much for having fewer people at the track, since IndyCar will be there, too. 32. Canadianfan posted: 07.21.2020 - 2:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) From Jayski: Following the only race weekend that Iowa Speedway will see in 2020, there are rumors swirling that the race track is likely to either be closed or sold before years end. Earlier in the year, NASCAR announced that Iowa Speedway would not host the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series and both NASCAR Xfinity Series as initially planned due to COVID-19 in 2020, even though Iowa state government would have allowed fans at a limited capacity. In early April of this year, NASCAR announced that a majority of the staff at the speedway had been released from their positions, and the tracks president, David Hyatt, and a small number of staff will stay to operate races this year. 34. Mile501 posted: 07.21.2020 - 9:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) What possible reason would there be for closing or taking dates away from Iowa Speedway? We need more short tracks, not fewer! 35. Anon posted: 07.21.2020 - 9:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rumor is Roger Penske has bought Iowa speedway, and that Nascar will not go back to Iowa either. Nashville Superspeedway will take the truck race and 2 xfinity dates. The truck race barely ever sells more than 2,000 tickets, and xfinity is lucky to get 5,000. Indycar is the only event at the track that does well. 36. Pacer posted: 07.21.2020 - 10:57 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Would the Captain keep it open? 37. Canadianfan posted: 07.21.2020 - 1:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Personally here's what I think happened. NASCAR bought the track a few years ago with plans to have a Cup race at the facility in 2021 when the track contracts were up. I remember reading a rumour that they were going to use the backstretch Daytona grandstand as part of their expansion for Iowa. However after a few years of owning the track they saw the disappointing turn out plus the lack of a TV market which is very important for NASCAR. Most people probably don't realize that's the most important thing even more than the fans actually sitting in the stands. So they begin talking to Dover about revitalizing Nashville SuperSpeedway which is an a big NASCAR market both for fans and TV. I imagine Penske will buy the track and it will be probably be IndyCar/ARCA for a few years while they make improvements to attract NASCAR again. 38. Anon posted: 07.22.2020 - 5:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The issue is that Nascar just isnt selling at Iowa. Look at the crowds for the truck and xfinity races last year. Then look at the Indycar crowd for last years event. Iowa just isnt a good market for nascar. I assume it will keep its Indycar race, but the nascar races are already gone. 39. Jimmie4life posted: 10.02.2020 - 8:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I doubt this track gets bulldozed. NASCAR's eagerness to get more variety on the cup schedule will keep this track alive for a while longer. I expect this track to either be on the 2022 or 2023 schedules. If not, I'd be more than a little disappointed. It's a good track to get an audience of Midwestern viewers who are used to average tracks like Chicagoland and Kansas. 41.
