This track will see Bristol's traditional concrete surface covered over with a removable layer of dirt as a new page of NASCAR history is written inside "The Last Great Colosseum." The NASCAR Cup races will not be the first time Bristol has hosted dirt track races. While the oval has always been a paved track since its 1961 opening in 2000 and 2001 the track put down dirt briefly during the summer so it could host separate weeks of World of Outlaws sprint car and Hav-A-Tampa late models racing. The races were a big success and the conversion was pretty cheap but the equipment heavy process for the switchover to and from the dirt surface ultimately proved to be a turnoff with the races ending after just two years. Later on a Bristol official said it was unlikely the track would ever try a dirt race again...and he would be proven wrong when NASCAR, FOX, and Bristol cut a deal to run the spring 2021 NASCAR races here on dirt. 2. Well it's been done." - the late, great Steve Evans, 2000, while showing fans their first glimpse of the dirt track Bristol. 3. It will take about six weeks after the World of Outlaw events to clean up the track. Over 30 dirt sites were sampled to get the right dirt for the race. Some of the dirt used for the NASCAR race was the same dirt Bristol used 20 years ago for the World of Outlaws event. It was kept on site. They will do the same thing with this years dirt for use next year. There are two reasons why the original run (2000-2001) didn't last long. 1. There wasn't much incentive to continue it for just one series (WoO). This time around the track will be used for multiple weekends making it more financially viable. 2. The amount of dust created by those events was contained at the track. The dirt and dust spread out into the surrounding community covering private homes and businesses. Smith did say that the track paid to power wash the community after the events. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
