Jeff Gordon has the most active wins with 6, 3 in the Daytona 500. Earnhardt Sr. has the most Nationwide Daytona wins with 7 while Dale Jr. and Tony Stewart are tied for 2nd overall and 1st active with 5 wins each. Todd Bodine is the only repeat winner at Daytona in the Trucks with 2 but has an average finish of 2.3 in 6 races. 3. One of the most well known tracks in the United States. It is best for the Daytona 500. Daytona 500 is one of the crown jewels on Nascar and is the race that a lot of cup drivers want to win the most through the years. Daytona is one of the 2 plate tracks on the circuit. Daytona is one of the two plate tracks that are on the cup schedule. Dale Earnhardt Sr. has the most Daytona wins overall. Dale Earnhardt Sr. won 34 times at the tack. His wins came from Nationwide Series wins, Gatorade Duel Wins, Budweiser Shootouts, IROC races and 3 cup points race he won including the Daytona 500. 6. Since opening in 1959, it has been the home to the biggest race in all of NASCAR, "The Great American Race", the Daytona 500. Today the facility has a seating capacity of almost 168,000 spectators. It hosts races of motor vehicles of various kinds, including go-karts, motorcycles (on and off road), sports cars, modified pickup trucks, and stock cars. The track features multiple layouts including a 2.5 miles (4.0 km) high speed tri-oval, a 3.56 miles (5.73 km) sports car course, and a 2.95 miles (4.75 km) motorcycle course, with a new .25 miles (0.40 km) karting and flat-track motorcycle racing circuit scheduled to open in December 2009. The track's 180-acre (73 ha) infield includes the 29-acre (12 ha) Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The facility is also used for an annual spring car show and swap meet, and a Thanksgiving street rod meet, some of the largest of their kind, and various 5,000 metres (3.1 mi) races around the track, as there have been three different layouts. In 2008, the city of Daytona Beach ran its first half marathon, utilizing the track as the start and finish line, around the Daytona 500 Experience, and Bethune-Cookman University. 9. Sources tell Mike Lovecchio [from Frontstretch.com] that an announcement will be made tomorrow by ISC the track will be fully repaved in time for the 2011 Daytona 500. According to sources, investigation into the track surface, which was last repaved in 1978, revealed ??concerns? that have forced ISC to move up the timeline of the project. A source also says there are still private worries remaining about the condition of the asphalt for July??s Coke Zero 400, but the choice has been made to not rush the project and wait until after the second round of Daytona races. The move is an about face from ISC and Daytona??s stance on the matter in February. After a pothole caused two red flags totaling two hours, 25 minutes for repairs in this year??s 500, DIS President Robin Braig was adamant the track would hold off on its repaving job until 2012. No word on the exact cost of the project, but sources claim pieces of the old asphalt could be sold to fans once the repave is complete. It's huge as well, the only other NASCAR track I've been to is Charlotte and in comparison to Daytona...it's puny. I attended my first NASCAR race in 2004 for the Busch Series race in July. The race where Jason Leffler took Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr. out on the last lap while Mike Wallace snuck by to get the win. I went to the Pepsi 400 the next night as well, it was way less dramatic as Jeff Gordon pretty much dominated the whole thing. 14. blaneyfan36 posted: 03.29.2011 - 10:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) So they want people laid to rest here? It's the closest racetrack to me that holds a big racing series event (there was a quick exception when ARCA raced at USA Speedway in Lakeland once in 2007). I've been to four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at this track in person (2004 and 2006 Pepsi 400s, 2006/2007 Budweiser Shootouts), two Nationwide Series races (2004 and 2007 July races) and the 2009 Rolex 24 Hours. It's an amazing place, so huge and full of history. The only downside to going to this track in my opinion, is that it is probably too big. You sometimes can only see parts of the track in front of you. I love it though and wish I could go more often, hopefully I can go to one Daytona 500 in person eventually. 17. If enough wrecks occur or red flags we could see it end during the night. 31. Handling probably is the most important thing about Daytona that sets it apart from Talladega. If the car doesn't handle all that well, you won't have a chance. * Have to have a reliable engine, there can't be any part failures. * Crew chief has to make good decisions in the pits. And there can't be any mistakes on pit road, it hurts more at Daytona due to the fact that one mistake can cost a lot of positions out on the race track and with race control watching pit stops more intently now, it is a lot easier to catch speeders, and other offenders. Bottom line, no mistakes. * The driver must have experience drafting to really be a threat. It's about finding a dancing partner and linking up with them and going to the front. * Avoid the big wreck and stay out of trouble, with cars running so close together there is a potential for huge pileups. * Having a fast car is nice, but there also has to be a little luck to go along with it. 32. kup posted: 11.21.2017 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) NASCAR CUP Daytona International Speedway 1959-2017 UPS: universal points system. However, it isn't - Daytona has a seating capacity of 101,000, which isn't filled, so if we say for arguements sake that the empty seats are balanced by the people in the infield, and call raceday attendance 101,000, then Daytona would be somewhere around 23rd (Boca Raton, pop 101,254). Even when Daytona was at it's largest, 167,000 seats, it probably came in around the size of the 10th largest city. 40. Never came close to Lake Lloyd or the road course section. To put Indy in perspective The year I went, I stayed at a hotel about 3 miles away. Convenient in that I was able to walk to the track and save on parking. The road brought me to Turn 2 and my seat was Turn 4. Consider that its a 2.5 mile track so your looking at half that distance between the two turns. So after walking 3 miles to get to the track, I still had another 1.3 miles of walking to get to my seat. My view was the exit of Turn 3 to the entrance to the pits. Thank god for Jumbotrons. It was steep. I can only imagine walking up 31 degrees of banking. I also remember they took us up into the booth where FOX Sports does their coverage. From up there you could see across the track to the backstretch and yes it was a long ways over there. ^^^Indianapolis I have heard multiple times is hard to see. The change is the biggest among several that NASCAR announced for the 2021 Speedweeks schedule, which will be shortened. The week will begin Tues night with the Clash, which will precede Daytona 500 pole qualifying Wednesday. The two qualifying duels will remain in their traditional Thursday (night) spots, the Truck series opener will remain on Friday night and the Xfinity series opener will be Saturday. The ARCA series opener, however, will be one week later on that Saturday (presumably following the Xfinity race). It all wraps up with the 63rd running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021. As far as the Clash goes, my personal opinion is that it should remain on the Daytona oval. I try to be open to change but this I don't see how will be any more successful or interesting. I'm usually a fan of road course racing but the Busch Clash is an event reserved for the fastest of the fast and for showcasing speed, as its original purpose was for the previous season's pole winners. Plus, the drafting and close racing on the oval has (usually) been exciting to watch. I know that in recent years, it's become a bit of a crashfest, but IMO I think it ought to remain on the high banks of the oval. Just my two cents. 68. Back in the late 60s, the Grand American series (basically the original xfinity series, running muscle cars) ran a 250 mile race on the infield road course, the ?Paul Revere 250.?) The race was ran on midnight July 3rd, hence they called it the ?Paul Revere 250? after the famous midnight ride. 69. If it was raining hard enough that they couldn't the race would have been red-flagged long before due to drivers not being able to see where they were going (which IMSA has done several times in the 24hrs). @86 - it'll actually be interesting to see if it can be done - Cup cars are quite a bit heavier and more powerful than any of the IMSA classes. The biggest problem will be when the track starts to dry, because the banks will dry much quicker than the infield section. I don't beleive Goodyear brings an intermediate, and wets could be quickly destroyed once the banking dries. 88. They simulated multiple different versions and without a chicane they were hitting 204 to 206 into 1. It was just not safe especially considering for that turn you are beginning to brake still on the banking and then it goes flat as you turn off. It's one of the toughest corners in racing and in a DPi and GT car it's no problem with so much downforce, their wings, and of course far superior brakes. They will also be running the high horsepower/high downforce package like last year. 101.
