The track is one of the oldest tracks in the United States. The track held NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) races from 1958 to 1984. Major feature and touring series winners at the track win a guitar. The Motorplex is currently an 18 degree banked paved oval. The track is 0.596-mile (0.959 km) long. Inside the larger oval is a quarter-mile paved oval. The track was converted to a half-mile paved oval in 1957, when its began to be a NASCAR series track. The speedway was lengthened between the 1969 and 1970 seasons. The corners were cut down from 35 degrees to their present 18 degrees in 1972. The track was repaved between the 1995 and 1996 seasons. 2. Racing would continue in 2011 and 2012, and then they'll decide. Not sure what they're doing with it now. 3. 83andJoe posted: 11.03.2013 - 1:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Track is currently named Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville. 4. This track is one of the very few that ever saw its weekly racing televised nationally. The Nashville Network (TNN) was based in town like its name implied and televised a lot of races from here including just weekly Winston Racing Series stuff in the mid-to-late 1990s when TNN Motorsports was at its peak. Of course TNN also aired plenty of the bigger races here including the NASCAR Busch and Truck series, the All-American 400, and even a few celebrity races with legends cars. Back in the 1980s when TNN rarely did NASCAR Winston Cup races they even aired a few tape-delayed coverages of the races here before the track left the schedule in 1984. 12. joey2448 posted: 08.31.2017 - 10:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sounds like the track is working on making a comeback in NASCAR's top series. I am all for changing the schedule completely, and Fairgrounds is a great little race track that wouldn't disappoint. I would definitely go to that first race back. 16. RaceFanX posted: 11.04.2018 - 10:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 34th Annual All American 400 here at Nashville was initially scheduled for initially scheduled for October 5-7, 2018 but rescheduled to November 2-4, 2018 after conflicts with other short track events that weekend and staffing issues related to them meant the race likely wouldn't have been a success there. Qualifying was held (Raphael Lessard took the pole) but the race itself Sunday, November 4, was rained out leading to the decision to hold the 2018 All American 400 in 2019; the race will now be April 13-14, 2019. 17. rm posted: 11.04.2018 - 10:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tough blow for the Fairgrounds. Guess they couldn't hold it on Monday with people going back to work - or in the case of Lessard, school? At least Lessard got a chance to tame the track if only in qualifying, after crashing out in his last two appearances there (last year's 400 and ARCA race that he was parked from starting). 18. RaceFanX posted: 11.04.2018 - 10:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) They did get in some of the 100-lap late model preliminary race so at least the fans got to go home after seeing some racing. A multi-car crash, including Sterling Marlin, was probably the highlight though. Casey Roderick was leading Travis Braden at the time of the washout 25 laps into the festivities. The change means there will be two All American 400s in 2019. The 34th annual race will now be in April while the regular 35th annual running will still be in November. Lessard loses his pole though as now everyone will requalify in April. 19. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 12.19.2018 - 3:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Track manager and SMI have struck a deal too bring NASCAR back. The 34th annual All American 400 was ultimately completely rained out. The track did make an attempt to run the race in April 2019 and with the new date the race gained a lot of publicity when Cup driver Kyle Busch filed to enter it as a last-minute addition since the new date didn't conflict with a NASCAR Cup race. The race was scheduled to run April 14 but when bad weather was forecast all weekend for the area the track cancelled the event April 10 rather than have everyone come only to get rained out again. Well, it was worth a shot. The 35th All American 400 will still take place later this year. 21. Canadianfan posted: 10.09.2019 - 11:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The sad fact is It's becoming quite clear the city leadership is looking for any excuse now to get rid of the track. They're planning on building for those who aren't aware a MLS soccer stadium pretty much right next-door. They want to develop the whole fairgrounds area around this new stadium. Based on everything I've read regarding this track I imagine it will be either a parking lot or condominiums in the next few years. The City of Nashville has no interest in fixing up what they refer to as an eyesore. 24. They used to have the Grand Ole Opry hotel, way back in the 90's. I remember the commercials during the NASCAR races on TNN. That has since been torn down for the Opry Mall. 26. Anonymous posted: 10.09.2019 - 1:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It sounded as though it was more of an ARCA issue than it was anything with the track. The series wasn't putting any money into the event. 27. RaceFanX posted: 10.09.2019 - 1:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 That's close enough I'll give you credit. The Opryland Hotel is still there (It's actually one of the largest hotels in the world) but the equally famous and heavily promoted by TNN Opryland USA amusement park was closed, torn down, and replaced by a mall (Opry Mills) like you said. The Grand Old Opry House was the only thing at the park that wasn't torn down. Losing the amusement park, which was a big draw for Nashville visitors, hurt the city in the years that followed as the big mall never drew the same number of visitors. 28. Form 1952 to 1991 an amusement park called Fair Park operated alongside the track, although the popularity of the previously mentioned Opryland USA did it in, with a giant wooden roller coaster called the Skyliner being visible behind Turn 4 as a result. The Skyliner operated from 1964 to 1985 and continued to stand until 1987 before it was removed sometime after that year's All-American 400. 44. From the restorenashvillefairgroundsspeedway site: Discussions between parties will include: -Management of the track to be potentially taken over by Bristol Motor Speedway. -Shifting financial responsibility for track renovation and maintenance to Bristol Motor Speedway. -Generation of additional revenue to the city through lease, rent and shared-event-revenue agreements. 45. From Adam Stern: Under the proposed deal between the city of Nashville and Speedway Motorsports, Bristol would lease/manage/operate the Fairgrounds Speedway and be responsible for renovations. ? The city would issue $50 million in bonds for renovations that would be paid back via event revenue. From Bob Pockrass: If Bristol and the Nashville Fair Board and Metro Council don't finalize deals before July 31, 2021 ... either party can terminate the proposed deal for Bristol to operate the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. Some of financial details of Bristol-Nashville letter of intent to operate Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. Bristol will pay $1 million per year. Board/community little surprised by LOI w/mayor's office. Number of races, noise, community impact main concern. Sounds to me could be tough negotiations but possible. From what I gather listening to the meeting, it isn't only about race on a weekend day during the summer as much as track rentals and other potential activity during the week in the Nashville Fairgrounds neighborhood. That track hasn't had NASCAR major event in decades. 47.
