In 1968, government agents raided the racetrack as part of a major illegal liquor sting. A secret door located in the ticket booth led to a ladder, which descended 35 feet to another hidden entrance. That trap door led to a 150-foot tunnel, which ended at a cave beneath the track infield. Inside the cave was a gigantic moonshine still, which was promptly shut down and the track owner was sent to the slammer. The race, however, was run as planned and won by Pearson enroute to his second series title. The last race to take place at the speedway was in 1984, and the track has since rotted away. 2. Bill France Sr. said in 1968,that Middle Georgia Raceway was the fastest 1/2 track in NASCAR...that can be verified at the Motorsports Hall of fame in Talladega.. I wish they could reopen that track.. 4. By 2018 it appears that an official historic marker was placed at the site. 5. Corey posted: 07.19.2020 - 11:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ken Ragan was the last person to win a race here. A horrific wreck happened in the 1970's were the car of Sonny Braswell crashed into the crossover gate. The guardrail next to the gate actual went through his car breaking both legs and pinning Sonny. The guardrail also cut Sonny in the neck and the only way to get him out was to cut the guardrail. Water was does over the area before they brought in the torch fuel and fumes was everywhere. Braswell ended up with 14 broken bones including 2 broken femurs. Just hours before the wreck Sonny proposed to his wife. He was fortunate to she lived and they were married for over 40 years until his death in 2017. 7. The Cincinnati Enquirer. "A dummy ticket booth at the Middle Georgia Raceway revealed one of the best kept secrets at the race track-- an elaborate moonshine whisky still. It took two sheriffs plus state and Federal officers about five hours to find it after a hunter smelled the fumes. Sheriff Reggie Mullis of Peach County called it one of the best built stills he had ever seen. Lamar Brown Jr., president of the track, was charged with possessing a distillery, Brack Poe of the state Alcoholic and tobacco tax unit of the state revenue department said. Poe said Brown waived a preliminary hearing and was released on $14,000 bond. Officers finally found a trap door in a ticket booth at one end of the race track. They descended about 20 feet to a 125-foot tunnel where the still was in operation. Mullis said the tunnel, only four feet wide, held a 2,000-gallon cooker and other equipment. The track cost about $500,000 to build and was opened in May 1966. Officers said they could not blow up the still because they would have destroyed the track, so they cut it apart with torches Monday." 10. The commercial featured two silver Durangos racing around the track at speed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
