It was paved in 1969, and used from 1962 to 1981, when it was sold to the owner of Oglethorpe Speedway to end any competition from the track. NASCAR ran from 1962 to 1970 with Richard Petty winning the final race on March 10, 1970. 2. robert wayne burton posted: 04.11.2011 - 10:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) my mom and dad leased the savannah motor speedway from late 60's till about 73 or 74.they also at the same time leased the savannah dragstrip. we lived in a mobile home in the pit area at the speedway.they ran the races at the speedway on saturday's and the dragstrip on sundays.we have super 8 reel to reel that we are working on to get transfered over to post online.I reamber sam summers racing, carl yarbourl, and others.also bobby miller racing at the dragstrip in a 1972 vega. bobby brooks in a 1932 english ford called half breed.I worked the dragstrip when it was nhra and irha.My sister won miss little savannah dragstrip,in 1971.we also had a 1959 red and white ambluce.my uncle ralph miller and son bobby have a long history at both tracks.lynn was annoucer at both tracks. thanks for me finding this page to comment on.hope to here back from all grand national fans from the hay days of racing. 3. He was a local Savannah native and I'm not even sure the year (?) He was born in the 1920's. His name was Andy Anderson. I wish I could find someone or some info on this. He's been long gone but his love of racing still lives on in his children.
