It plays host to Ford Championship Weekend, the final races of the season in the IRL IndyCar Series, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, Camping World Truck Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. The NASCAR races are currently all sponsored by Ford Motor Company, taking the names Ford 400, Ford 300, and Ford 200, respectively. On March 26, 2006 Indy Racing League driver Paul Dana suffered fatal injuries in the warmup session before the race when he was involved in a high-speed collision with Ed Carpenter at over 215 mph (346 km/h). Other drivers to suffer fatal injuries at the speedway are John Nemechek in a Camping World Truck Race in March 1997, and Jeff Clinton who died in a Grand Am sports car event at the track in March 2002. 2. The track has gone through three track configurations: a rectangle which was like a "mini-Indianapolis" which consisted of short, flat turns that were very hard to pass on and reduced speed. In 1997, the track was reconfigured to have continuous turns. However, the turns were still quite flat and in 2003, the banking was raised to 18 degrees and installed lights in 2005. 3. Hope he gets one, but seems a slight doubtful. 4. Speculation is it will move to the 2nd race of the season while Las Vegas' 2nd date will become the new championship weekend. 5. autryvilleracefan posted: 07.25.2012 - 1:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) RLewis9, that wouldn't be a bad idea. It would certainly make it easier on the drivers and teams to have race dates in close geogrphic locations instead of the current schedule of criss-crossing the country so much. Homestead could come right after Daytona. NASCAR should schedule Phoenix, Fontana and Las Vegas consecutively. 6. As it opened in 1995, the old configuration was measured with 1.527 miles, the revised layout from 1997 with 1.517 miles. Then the flat classic oval layout was measured with 1.502 miles by CART. The new banked layout was measured by IRL with 1.485 miles. NASCAR still used all time the rounded value of 1.5 miles, regardless of the layout. 18. NASCAR apparently even said they had no interest in scheduling a Cup race here until something changed, the track finally gained a Cup date two years after its renovation into a more traditional oval in mid-1997. 25. The one that JMac ended up winning. The race started and it was considerably hot. I was sitting in the Oldfield tower coming off turn 4 onto the trioval and the sun was to my left over the beach/ocean and the whole left side of my face was sunburned. The right didn't show any burning. Let me tell you... It got really cool that night. I was at Daytona from about 11A-9P after the red flags and trying to get out of there. I was sun burned and then my face felt like it was freezing with the cool air coming off the ocean at the end of the race. It was about 30 degree temperature drop. So the temperature may say it's warm, but it can get cool, too, off that ocean. At the beach a 5 mile shift can go as far as 25 degree drop. So, it could depend on when they start the race how cool it gets. The engines should be purring in the cool weather. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
