The track was abandoned after the 1985 Grand Prix when IMSA moved north to a new street course in Bicentennial Park. The track was revived in 2002 to host CART and ALMS action but abandoned for good after 2003. The rain-soaked 1983 Grand Prix of Miami here was the first time IMSA raced on a street course. 2. The episode famously featured Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan guest starring as a race car driver accused of killing a prostitute (the titular "Florence Italy") but in an odd twist for a guest star on that show he comes out relatively fine: Crockett and Tubbs clear his name, he becomes a father, and wins the race at the wheel of a Porsche 962 over the course of the episode. Famously the episode ends with a car chase out of the track onto the city streets where the real killer, the Mario Andretti-inspired father of Sullivan's character, takes off in his race car when the police close in. 3. possum posted: 11.15.2020 - 6:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @1 - yes, it was the first time IMSA ran on a street course. I recall them franticaly welding all the manhole covers in place the night after the first practice sessions, since it became painfully evident that a GTP prototype generates more than enough suction to pull a manhole cover out of the road. I'd forgotten they resurrected it for a couple of years after the turn of the century. By then the IRL had Homestead under contract, and CART was in it's dying days and looking for anywhere the could run. I don't recall now if it was before the first race or the second that CART's director said people don't care about the race, they come for the experience - CART's demise shortly thereafter should be a lesson to other racing series not to put "show" ahead of competition. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
