Dirt until 1955 in which it was paved. Track demolished in 1984. Races held from 1952 to 1956. 2. Seems like they raced there earlier than 1952. 4. We used to call it the "fairgrounds track", being a shorter name than Palm Beach Speedway. North of Southern Blvd, a little west of the Turnpike. @4, no, you're confused. IMSA ran the GTP cars on a street circuit in downtown WPB. What you may be thinking of is the reason why the speedway was closed - the original promoter for the GTP race (who's name I can't recall) was one of those slimey individuals who seem to be attracted to the fringes of the racing world. He convinced the county that, if they tore up the fairgrounds oval, he'd build a world-class road course for the GTP and maybe Indy or F1. So the county tore up the oval, and that was the last anyone ever heard of the project. It was a shame, because they used to get the All-Pro series (what's now the K&N East, basically) once or twice a year, and you'd get a big name driver or two like Bobby Allison or Harry Gant making an appearance. After the fairgrounds closed, the All-Pro ran Hialeah for a couple of years, but Hialeah was a little too small for a full field of late models. 6. Their biggest event besides the south Florida Fair is the Barrett Jackson Collector Auction that happens every April. Also when you walk out behind the expo center where the auction cars are usually held you can still see the very faded checkered flag pattern on the concrete where the finish line was. 7. But I think IMSA also ran down town West Palm beach while they where in the process of removing the oval with a promise from the land owner of a state of the art road course to be built at another location to attract IndyCar and F1 but never materialized. 9. It is not where you think it would be if you look at a current Google Map. It was oriented in the east west with the stands on the south straight. It was situated between the purple roofed buildings on the west and the pond on the right. Front straight was even with the middle of the orange roofed buildings. Assuming the track did not change between 46 and when NASCAR arrived. 1967 map shows the same as 46 so this is it.... This shows the track as viewed from the south https://www.flickr.com/photos/92027965@N08/9355362385 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
