It was a popular racing destination in the 1960s as it hosted high-level road racing events including USAC Champ Car, SCCA Trans-Am and several large sports car races but it started to fade from prominence in the 1970s. The track closed in 1979 after a fatal accident that according to na-motorsports.com claimed the life of a driver and a pit crew member while injuring several others but reopened in 1981. The track hosted a Winston West race the following year but closed for good in 1983. It was sold off to real estate developers and demolished although no serious construction followed. The land today is more or less just vacant prarie but a vague outline of the former course can be seen from the air according to na-motorsports and a look on Google Maps. 2. Cobra driver Dan Gerber, slid off the track and all the way to nearby Interstate 25. He proceeded to drive on it to a side entrance gate only to be denied entry due to lack of spectator ticket. He eventually got back into the race and finished 13th. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
