Founded and idolized by conman Joseph Smoot, he was able to get funding to build the track, by his fake story of creating other tracks in Florida and California. He had earned 2 million in funding by about 8000 shareholders and built the facility. He would later die just a couple years later bankrupt. The track itself was a mess. Everything was old, and useless in the 1950's as the horse track had an incapable tote board, and old parimutuel systems that made enjoyment impossible. In addition there was only 1 entry/exit, which angered fans to the point that the traffic forced them to go home. After just two weeks of racing, the meet was canceled, and the track was closed. At this time, in need of some money to gain from the disaster, the track turned to NASCAR to host a race. This lasted just 1 year in 1955. At this time, the track was sold four ways to what is now a hotel, country club, and a convention center. 2. The track was still very visible on Historic Aerials until 1965 but totally obliterated by the year after that. There was also a smaller track across the road to the west, not sure if it was grayhound racing or a dirt auto track. Definitely too short for horses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
