The track was built in 1965 and the starting the following year hosted some major events including the USAC Champ Car, Can-Am, Trans-Am and the United States Road Racing Championship. It's time as a high-level track would be short lived though, in 1969 the Stardust Hotel changed hands and the new owners largely abandoned the facility. Drag racing continued until 1970 but after that the property was sold to real estate developers, demolished and the land used for the first construction of what is today the Spring Valley community. Spring Valley has since grown to a town covering 33 square miles and has a population of 178,000; maybe fittingly NASCAR racers Kurt and Kyle Busch went to high school in Spring Valley. The Stardust hotel that built this track has itself been reduced to dust and memories. The once iconic casino couldn't compete with the newer Las Vegas mega-resorts that sprang up over the years and it closed on November 1, 2006. The building was demolished by implosion the following March to be replaced by a new complex dubbed Echelon Place before construction stalled out in 2009. 2.
