The two tracks got their dates taken away for this track are North Wilkesboro Speedway and North Carolina Speedway. The 2nd race they got was caused by a lawsuit that claimed Nascar promised the track two dates. It had exciting finishes in the Irl and Nascar in the past. It is not the best cookie cutter track out there for Nascar racing, but it is not the best. It is more on equipment than driver here for stock car racing. 2. Sadly, it was the beginning of the end of CART. Also home to Wind bag Eddie Gossage, one of NASCAR's greatest promoters. Somebody said it best "aren't all great promoters wind bags." 3. The track layout is similar to Atlanta Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway (formerly Lowe's Motor Speedway). The track measures 1.5 miles (2.4 km) around and is banked 24 degrees in the turns, and is of the quad-oval design, where the front straightaway juts outward slightly. The track is owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc., the same company that owns Atlanta and Charlotte Motor Speedways, as well as the short-track Bristol Motor Speedway. 4. Even though he won in 2007 and 2010* (One of the six he should of have won...PERIOD!), this track is bad to him and had his worst finish of last twice in 1999 and 2008. 8. Eric posted: 03.15.2014 - 8:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) There is a reason why Dale Earnhardt never won at the track. Dale Earnhardt wasn't at his peak anymore when the first cup race happened here in 1997. Dale in 1997 wasn't the same driver as he was before the summer Talladega of 1996. Dale had injuries from that race wasn't healed before the 2000 season started besides RCR being behind the times in the late 1990's. 15. Canadianfan posted: 01.06.2017 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Prior to the April 9th race the Texas Motor Speedway will be repaved and reconfigured to address the weeper problems. Turns one and two will be widened from 60 to 80 feet and the banking will be reduced from 24 to 20 Degrees. Turns three and four will not be changed. This is going to be interesting. I don't even know if they really have enough time apparently GoodYear wants to have a tire test in March so they have even less time to do it. 17. That has me pretty worried I don't want another 2005 Coca-Cola 600 or 2008 Brickyard 400. Although those races were interesting they were interesting for the wrong reason. 19. chevyfan98 posted: 01.06.2017 - 9:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) What was wrong with the 2005 Coca Cola 600? I think you meant the fall race, that was the one with all the tire problems. The Coke 600 had the caution record but I think only two or three them were tire failures, nearly all the rest of them were legit crashes. I thought that was a great race, the attrition and alternate strategies made for lots of different drivers to be up front at different times. 20. It's a documented (but not highly publicized) fact that most tracks aren't actually their advertised length. Most are off by some fraction. IndyCar usually uses the actual length for their speeds, but not always. 24. The banking in turns 1 and 2 has been reduced from 24 to 20 degrees and has been substantially widened. Kind of reminds me of Kentucky Speedway now. The track also took the repaving opportunity to fix the water drainage issues it has experienced in the past. 26. Nascar has flat and banked half mile (Martinsville and Bristol) flat and banked one mile (Phoenix and Dover), and a flat three quarter mile (Richmond). A three quarter miler with banking would add some nice variety. I feel like they missed an opportunity. 30. I do agree w/ @47 that it doesn't hold the same weight it used to, but the drivers still favor it & NASCAR isn't getting rid of it. Rotation would hopefully make it less stale, w/out venturing into the land of whatever gimmick NASCAR fancies. Though I did like the neon, maybe keep that :) 53. possum posted: 09.21.2020 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @52 - to me the neon is just a symbol of what a disaster NASCAR is today. Can't tell the difference between a Chevy, Ford, or Toyota because they all look the same? Just stick a colored light under them. 54. Z posted: 09.21.2020 - 7:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @53, I'd like it whether they looked the same or not, though I agree w/ your point about the cars. Though I doubt NASCAR will change that. I'll take a cautiously optimistic outlook for NASCAR going forward - they at least seem to be trying *something AFA tracks & so on - but the package experimenting needs to be fixed, and (as asked for years now), top of the list is less aero-dependence (that one's likely a pipe dream, unfortunately). I guess after the COT, anything pales in terms of disaster - there just happened to be more competitive teams to distract from. Which brings the whole Charter mess, but that pit's deeply rooted now. 55.
