This track will host Formula 1's new Baku European Grand Prix starting in 2016. The course will race past Baku's UNESCO World Heritage Site the Old City, the country's Government House, and Azadliq Square in the city's center. Weirdly spectator viewing areas will be relatively limited by F1 standards, it is anticipated that there will be room for only about 28,000 fans. 2. Azerbaijan's highly questionable human rights record and the country passion for using big events for propaganda reasons (the 2015 European Games, their recurring pursuit of the Summer Olympics) are throwing up red flags here too but you could say that about many countries these days (Russia is often does the same thing). Calling it the European Grand Prix when Azerbaijan is barely what one would classify as "Europe" and scheduling this race against the 24 Hours of Le Mans, seemingly to keep F1 drivers out of that event, also has drawn jokes and criticism. 4. I don't know if that's to make them look better or possibly some form of protection (they are racing next to a World Heritage Site after all). 5. The circuit itself presents as an interesting blend between Monaco and Macau, with a Monza / Fuji style ultra long straight for good measure. Mercedes are trialling a low downforce wing configuration in FP1. 6. But the track seems interesting, its a sort of throwback to the old days of streetcourses in the 80s and early 90s. 7. This race was renamed as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 2017 onward. 8. Realistically either Ferrari driver and Max Verstappen could keep the streak of different winners going in 2020. 9. Notable Azerbaijani racers listed on DriverDB include F4 racer Gulhuseyn Abdullayev, Porsche Cup racer Fakhreddin Mirzoev, and Garri Mazmanov, who in 1987 raced in an Eastern Bloc Formula 3-style series. 10.
