The track featured two very long straightaways made up of a dual carriageway with a hairpin at the end that was too tight for the A1GP race cars to get around. Combine that with manhole covers that started ripping loose from the cars passing by and safety crews who had trouble removing cars in a timely fashion and this track was a bit of a mess. Oddly despite all the hassles this course was designed by F1's famous/infamous track designer Hermann Tilke. No idea if they followed his instructions completely or not, Tilke's tracks may sometimes lack excitement but they are almost always driveable. This track was abandoned after its single A1GP race weekend as "too expensive," costing 20 million yuan/$2.6 million US to set up and operate. Open-wheel Racing would later return to the streets of Beijing when the city hosted a non-points Superleague Formula street course race on a different track called the Beijing International Street Circuit (note the space in the name) set up around the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park that was built for the 2008 Summer Olympics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
