This street course is the first Saudi Arabian track to be listed on Racing-Reference with its Formula E race set to be the country's first major auto race. The electric car race arrives as Saudi Arabia moves forward with its Vision 2030 plan for an evolution of its country, aiming to diversify its economy beyond oil revenues while increasing recreation and tourism amid cultural reforms (weirdly this also included contracting with the WWE for a pay-per-view wrestling event). Formula E caught some global flack when the Saudi race was announced with some commenters saying racing in the very traditional country is at odds with the forward looking image the series tries to project. Saudi Arabia only legalized driving for women earlier in 2018 and behind the scenes Formula E refused to grant the race unless it was assured there would be no issues if female drivers were entered in the event. 3. Formula E will just be the first global series to race there. 4. In the October leading up to this race American-based Saudi national journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of the country's de facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who is pushing the Vision 2030 plan, disappeared after entering Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey with evidence piling up afterward it he was killed inside it in a government-connected manner. While both Formula E and the WWE were pressured to pull out of planned events in Saudi Arabia in protest afterward the electric car series announced it still plans to go ahead with its opener in Riyadh. 5. Formula 1 is set to debut its first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Grand Prix as a night race on another street circuit, this time in Jeddah. 6. I understand the benefits of doing this event at night but a track where everything but the racing surface is dark just looks dull. There was like no scenery to these races at night. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
