It was built in the 1930's and hosted pre-F1 South African Grands Prix in 1934 as well as 1936-39 until World War 2 halted all racing. The track was modified in 1959 to meet F1 standards and hosted races sanctioned by F1 from 1962-63 and in 1965. It also hosted rounds of the now-defunct South African F1 series. Also, in the years before WW2, German manufacturers used the track to test tyres, most prominently Audi. 2. Tylor Thaber posted: 07.31.2015 - 8:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Still open. Also has a bit of a rarity, a kart track built into the main layout. That means karters get a taste of the full track, but also means the karts and cars can't run at the same time. 3. The track was eventually saved. Mercedes-Benz's South African branch is based in East London and the car maker backed a push in 2014 to upgrade the facility back to a higher level and today it is again hosting races for domestic series. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
