Formula 1, the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series currently compete here. Michael Schumacher has the most wins at the circuit with 7 in Formula 1. There've been 6 first time winners in 30 Formula 1 races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: Gilles Villeneuve (1978), Michele Alboreto (1985), Thierry Boutsen (1989), Jean Alesi (1995), Lewis Hamilton (2007) and Robert Kubica (2008). CART/CC, Nationwide and CTS have yet to have repeat winners. Oriol Servia got his first CART/CC win here in 2005. Aside from the Canadian Tire Series, based in Canada, two Canadian drivers have won at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: Gilles Villeneuve in Formula 1 in 1978 and Ron Fellows in the Nationwide Series in 2008. 2. As of 2007, NASCAR Nationwide Series and Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series held races there. The Canadian Grand Prix that took place for 30 years at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was dropped from the 2009 Formula One calendar and replaced with the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On November 27, 2009, Quebec's officials and Canadian Grand Prix organisers announced they have reached a settlement with Formula One Administration and signed a new five-year contract spanning the 2010-2014 seasons. The 2010 edition is set to take place on June 13th. 3. Biscuits in a Red Bull posted: 12.27.2011 - 4:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Spa and Monaco are overrated! Every single race F1 have here is always worth watching. It is actually impossible to have a bad race here, whilst Monaco and Spa have seen some very boring ones. They get half of their excitement through massive crashes. 4. The island was originally built in 1965 to host the city's Expo 67 World's Fair shortly thereafter. Later much of the World's Fair's site was demolished so the island could used for the constuction of the Olympic Basin for the rowing and canoeing events of the 1976 Summer Olympics. Today the race track runs parallel to the basin, still the largest in North America, on the final straight before the short turn onto the frontstretch. It was originally called Ile Notre-Dame Circuit from its opening until it was renamed after Villeneuve, who won the first F1 race in 1978, in 1982 following his death at the wheel. The track can only be used for two race weekends a year according to local laws which are currently used for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada and a weekend involving the NASCAR Nationwide series, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the Grand-Am sports car series. The NASCAR weekend replaced the track's former CART / CCWS Grand Prix of Montreal. When the track is not in use it is open to the public. Some scenes for the movie 'Driven' were also filmed here, while the movie is about CART racing CART didn't begin racing here until the year after the film came out and the scenes filmed here were done to represent a fictional road course in Germany. 6. Biscuits In A Red Bull posted: 06.07.2014 - 1:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Shame, a Cup race here would be impressive. A new 10 year contract has been signed with Formula 1, so there will be at least one good race for the next 10 seasons... 8. I like Mid-Ohio, don't get me wrong, but this race produced some of the greatest/memorable races and finishes I've ever seen. Give it back it's Xfinity date, see how it goes, and then possible even a Cup date. Would be awesome. 10. Canadianfan posted: 03.25.2020 - 5:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) For Formula 1 I foresee one of three possibilities and I will break them down in order of what I feel is most likely to least likely. 1. That's it for 2020. One by one races will be postponed and then cancelled as it becomes clear that not even running races without fans is safe. (Although it does make things very interesting considering 13 out of the 20 drivers will be out of contract in 2021. Does the final year of their contracts become void and the teams pretend that 2021 is actually 2020 and they run as normal or will we have several drivers who were contracted to run this year not end up running next year. Also McLaren has said no matter what they will be using a Mercedes engine next year. That leads us to a Brawn 2009 situation. The Brawn was originally a Honda and of course designed for a Honda engine and when they put the Mercedes engine in they had to make some big adjustments to make it fit and in fact the car's centre of gravity was never balanced properly because of the change.) 2. They are able to run a few races but not the minimum eight required for a championship by FIA rules thus the 2020-21 becomes a wraparound season like Formula e and the WEC have. (Both things I brought up in 1 come into play here as well. 3. We are able to run a minimum of eight races or more and we have ourselves a championship. (Let's be reasonable though we all know it's going to be Mercedes and Hamilton as it has been since 2017. The more interesting questions are how far would Ferrari fall behind (Rumour has it the FIA made them re-design their engine after they cheated last year and because of it they have less power.) and how well Racing Point's Mercedes clone work.) 17. A report Tuesday by Quebec motorsports magazine Pole-Position says the 2020 edition of the Canadian Grand Prix will take place in Montreal on Oct. 9, 10 and 11 ? with a limited number of spectators. (I personally haven't heard anything else about this but we will know soon enough.) 19. RaceFanX posted: 07.24.2020 - 10:44 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 2020 Canadian Grand Prix was initially scheduled to be run here but ultimately cancelled along with all other F1 races in the Americas that season due to the global pandemic. As noted above unlike the American, Mexican, and Brazilian Grand Prix races there was a legitimate attempt to move the Canadian GP back in the schedule from June to October but ultimately international travel restrictions led to the race taking a hiatus. 20. Several possible scenarios, but difficult decision due to sanitary, economic, vaccination, etc issues. Postponing to autumn is complicated by busy calendar. Let's keep hoping! (I personally don't think it is going to happen. What really angers me is the group that runs the race has yet to pay back the ticket holders from last year.) 21. Canadianfan posted: 04.14.2021 - 1:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There's talk about making this a so-called ghost race i.e. behind closed doors. The promoters want more money though from Liberty to make it possible. I don't think it will happen. The rumour is Turkey will be replacing it. 22. Canadianfan posted: 04.15.2021 - 2:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) From Chris Medland: After a report from @RadioCanadaInfo that the race is off, the official line from F1 at this stage is: "We are continuing our discussions with the promoter in Canada and have no further comment.? (There are other options they could run the last weekend of July or the second weekend of August. There is also an opening in mid-October before the Austin race. However the problem with that is there would be seven straight weeks of racing for the teams. Ultimately they will probably run Turkey instead,) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
