Why is that unusual for a race in Alberta? Because the race was run in August in the middle of summer. The event was scheduled for 500 laps but snowed out after just 382 with "The Polar Bear" Mike Eddy bagging the win over Johnny Benson, Jr. and Gary St. Amant. The race was run on an off weekend for the Winston Cup series and featured a guest driver as four-time ASA champion Mark Martin made a surprise appearance, driving an Oldsmobile no less when he was one of Ford's big guns in NASCAR, and Martin sat on the pole and was leading until he lost it after blowing a tire and crashed out. Snow in Alberta in August isn't quite common but it does happen every now and then. The ASA series, traditionally more of a staple in the Midwestern United States, made an annual visit to Race City each year from 1988 to 1993, hosting two races in 1992. Traditionally the series ran here in early July with the snowed out event in late August being the only exception to that. Benson won the last race here in 1993 on his way to the series' title. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
