Martin Truex, Jr. won the inagural event. They ran here for four seasons before taking it off the schedule. NASCAR found a replacement track for an out of country race, Circuit Gilles Villenueve in Montreal. There was also safety concerns in Mexico City, it's not the safest place in the world. 2. The circuit got its name shortly after it opened when Ricardo Rodríguez died in practice for the non-Championship 1962 Mexican Grand Prix. Ricardo's brother Pedro also lost his life behind the wheel years later). Built in a public park in 1962, the circuit hosted its first Formula One Grand Prix the same year, as a non-Championship race. The following year the Mexican Grand Prix became a full World Championship event. The circuit remained part of the F1 calendar through 1970, when spectator overcrowding caused unsafe conditions. When the track re-opened in 1986, the circuit boasted a new pit complex, as well as improved safety all around. The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez (as of 2008) has been the only venue for the Mexican Grand Prix. The circuit is located within the public park of the Magdalena Mixiuhca in northeast Mexico City. The circuit is owned by the Government of the City, but is currently operated under concession by Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento, S.A. de C.V. or CIE, through OCESA, one of CIE's subsidiaries. CIE also organizes the NASCAR and Desafío Corona races in this circuit and rents the circuits to other parties, including race organizers, automobile clubs and track amateurs for fees that are controversial due to their disproportionately high amounts compared to other ex-F1 courses. The NASCAR Nationwide Series started racing at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in the 2005 season and ended in the 2008 season. Martin Truex Jr. won the race in 2005, and Denny Hamlin won in 2006. For the 2007 race, the chicane was removed to increase passing opportunities down the front straight and into turn 1, and Juan Pablo Montoya from Bogotá, Colombia, won the race. Kyle Busch was the winner of the race in 2008. The A1 Grand Prix series started racing at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in the 06-07 season using the full-track configuration used by Formula One. Alex Yoong from Malaysia won the sprint race and Oliver Jarvis from the United Kingdom won the feature race. In the 07-08 season, Jonny Reid from New Zealand won the sprint race and Adam Carroll of Team Ireland won the feature race. 4. I believe the stadium was going to switch to artifical turf, in order to facilitate a much easier transition from baseball field to race track. 8. I hope they will race here in 2014. 9. Anthony posted: 07.24.2015 - 7:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Good to see F1 back in Mexico City. Pity the track was butchered. 10. Long Beach has already hosted both. 12. RaceFanX posted: 12.09.2015 - 9:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) You're right. Ditto Monaco if we include exhibitions. I should have specified a permanent road course over street courses (although even then Brands Hatch hosted a Formula E test race). 13. pimmy posted: 12.09.2015 - 10:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes, how did I forget Monaco? (Duh!) Donington Park hosted the test races & sessions, as it's where all the cars are based. 14. This will be the second time that Mexico City's road course will host a NASCAR Mexico race (the first time was an exhibition race in 2007). 15. IndyCar won't be racing here in 2018, but the series is hoping to add a race in Mexico City for 2019. 18. With the recent change of government they have decided the money they pay yearly to host the race would be better spent on infrastructure mainly a new high speed train. 19. Canadianfan posted: 08.07.2019 - 6:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 Boy am I shocked I would've bet money after everything I heard that this race the Mexican Grand Prix was done for sure but apparently they are days away from announcing a new multi-year contract. Somehow the new government came to an agreement with the promoter. 20. Unser1 posted: 03.11.2020 - 3:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This F1 race is back in 2020 with a new name. After many years as the Mexican Grand Prix the race will now be the Mexico City Grand Prix. Seems like an unusual change but they are making it. 21. Canadianfan posted: 03.11.2020 - 4:05 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @20 There was a change of government in Mexico and they didn't want to pay for it anymore. The city on the other hand is fine to continue and I believe Liberty Media is giving them a discount. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
