Now that the final qualifying session of the year is done, I thought I'd share a project I've been working on for a while now: analyzing the top ten in qualifying throughout the year. I order them by number of top ten starts, with ties broken by poles, top five starts, then best start.

For the second year in a row, Kyle Larson has had the most top ten starts, with 27. Just two shy of the 29 he had last year, showing that the qualifying metric really didn't give him as big of an advantage as some people claimed last year. Reddick was a big surprise to me. 23 top ten starts is the highest number for an RCR car since 1990! Possibly very good news for Busch next year if they keep that up. Notable consistency among the Penske cars, though Cindric has the dubious distinction of having the lowest top ten total compared to starts, with 9 less. Trackhouse is very meh on qualifying day, but Ross has made up for it on Sundays. The #45 has 11 top ten starts from four different drivers. The #23 has 6 between its two. Kevin Harvick has had more top ten starts without getting a top five start than any driver since Ron Bouchard's 11 in 1985! Shoutout to Joey Hand for giving Rick Ware their best ever qualifying effort.

36 top ten qualifyers is the highest number since 2014, which had an unusually large number thanks to group qualifying on plate tracks. Four full-time teams have had no top ten starts: The two Spire cars, Cody Ware and B.J. MacLeod's team. That's the lowest number of teams with zero top ten starts since 2009.

Thank you for posting this!

What stood out most to me was the significant difference between the RCR teammates. The Petty-GMS teammates also have a pretty large gap. In both cases, we have a very talented driver and a marginally-talented Dillon who are teammates.

By the way, Joey Hand should be 0 0 1 rather than 0 0 0.

Hopefully over time, we'll be able to attract more people here.

Got Hand fixed, thanks! Speaking of Petty-GMS, I forgot to mention that Jones has the most top ten finishes compared to starts, with 9 more top ten finishes.
